November 19 Planning Commission meeting outcome
« on: November 20, 2009, 11:42 »
Up before the Planning Commission for the 4th time, the scientologists couldn't have been happy when the Planning Commission voted unanimously once again to DENY the "alternate" motion which would allow the basement to be enclosed, even with a proposed cap on capacity of 170 people in the building at the same time.  The reason was the difficulty and the burden which would be put on the city of Sandy Springs and its citizens in trying to enforce that cap.  Other issues which were discussed were the removal of trees which would violate the city's tree ordinance.  These willful attempts to change and violate the community's ordinances and zoning restrictions, instead of working within the city's common regulations, demonstrate that the scientologists have no intention of being a good neighbor or becoming a part of the existing community.

The Planning Commission voted 3-2 to recommend the approval of the "Staff's Recommendation" of the motion to allow the scientologists to occupy the existing 3 floors of the building.

Deb Danos, the DSA of the Atlanta Org, appeared to be the only scientologist in attendance this time, unlike the last several times.  Perhaps the continuing denials are too enturbulating for them, the self-proclaimed experts on confrontation and communication.

Galloway is still singing the "We're different, but you must treat us the same.  Whaaa!  You're treating us differently; that's discrimination!" song.  Apparently he wants the same treatment when it is to his advantage, and different treatment when that is to their advantage.

Mr. Galloway, you and the scientologists can't be both a floor wax and a dessert topping.

Something which was also discussed was a discrepancy in the square footage of the building if the basement were allowed to be enclosed.  Both the paperwork and Mr. Galloway consistently have referred to the square footage as being 43,000 sq. ft., but a local resident architect and scientology's architect examined the plans and BOTH agreed that the square footage would be 45,000 sq ft., yet the use of the 43,000 number is still being used by Galloway in his presentations and in the rezoning application.  This was questioned, and the PC stopped just short of outright calling Mr. Galloway a liar.  Apparently, the PC grows weary of all the misrepresentations.

Video will be available when, well, when it's available.  A notice will be posted when it's online.

There was a brief and relatively insignificant story on Channel 5's news last night, but other than that, I haven't seen anything.  I guess from the TV perspective, it's kinda like a rerun, and the news doesn't usually do reruns.   :)

No, it goes back to the Mayor and City Council in December (the 15th, I believe) for their final vote.  That is, unless Galloway prompts another deferral.

It was on WSB TV news last night. I didn't see anything in newspaper other than the pre-meeting article by SS Reporter.

The news people are probably tired of reporting on it.  Nothing drastic has changed so until something; exciting and definite occurs I think the news is over it.

cross post

What sci wanted most they were denied on. If the city council follows what the planning commission recommended this will be a "church" without a sanctuary. The rezoning was to add the sanctuary and decrease parking.

When the video goes up of the meeting you can watch

the cults lawyer be told he wasn't called up to the podium to speak yet
the cults lawyer told to answer questions directly
the cult has submitted rezoning material with the wrong square footage in it and they get called on it.
the cults lawyer expalin that actually very few sci exist in atl, but they need so much space because it takes a lot of room for them to practice their "faith"

you can see the neighbors mention 16 home owner associations that are opposed to this
you can see the neighbors show picts of how crappy the building looks now and how unmaintained it is
you will see the neighbors greatly oppose this!

Sci always had the ability to move into this building. However, they are hung up on wanting a sanctuary badly. At a past rezoning meeting the sci lawyer said they had to have a sanctuary.

I love how they always could have moved in, except that they always want to demand more than zoning allows, just to be special.

I especially love how Mr. Toy Lawyer (har har har I crack me up) insisted they practiced a class-type setting, individual counseling, and thus are unlike most other churches ... and now the deal has changed to requiring a sanctuary!

I only hope the people of Sandy Springs actively complain whenever their parking lot fills, and whenever it's apparent that there are more people there (ahem: grand opening!) than the law allows.
