Interesting Video About Video Games
« on: July 13, 2009, 17:03 »
This is someone named David Perry giving a lecture on Video Games.  I think some interesting points come up in the lecture and was wondering what y'all thought. 8) http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/david_perry_on_videogames.html

Michael Highland's (if I caught the name correctly) video within the lecture is, indeed, thought provoking.  He covers a lot that is true of games as well as books.  The best i have read leave the main character(s) open enough to be immersive rather than just a third party being followed.  Games, though, take this beyond what books and movies can do, and give the player full control.

The entire lecture is inspired, and says a lot that many people find difficult to express.

I'm not a gamer, but I found the video fascinating.  It reminded me of a time in the early 90s, when I had gone to an engineering and design trade show, and I stood in a long line for the opportunity to put on VR goggles and glove.  It looked primitive from the outside, but when inside, the rest of the world disappeared.  Of course, at the time, the graphics were pretty primitive too, but the experience of walking where I pointed, and seeing everything around me in 3D , whichever way I turned my head, was captivating.  The VR technology had just emerged from science fiction into science fact.  I could see a time in the future when people would plug in and rarely come out.  We haven't quite gotten to that point yet, with most hyper-real video experiences taking place on a flat screen in front of you, though the hardware exists to have true VR with realistic graphics. I wouldn't even want to ask what it costs.  The video (within the video) let me know that my vision of the future is a certainty, and, in my opinion, somewhat of a danger with the possibility of programmed interaction replacing real life human interaction.  I was glad to hear he wasn't devoid of emotion for his video experiences.

Thanks for posting that.  I also hadn't known about the ted.com site - I will probably watch some more of the videos there.

Passed link on to my Dean, or former Dean once my diploma is in my hot little hands, as she focuses on Game Design. She's probably already seen it, but, if not, I just got some Nice Points. Thanks! :P

Interesting video. I'm not a gamer or a scientologist :) But, I found the history pretty fascinating.
He covered a lot of material in a short period of time, making his presentation seem a little rushed.

Thanks for posting.

As a big video gamer I have been scared, sad, and etc in video games as he mentions. However, sadly most of my feelings fall one sided.  Its all about my survival. I don't get sad when my "computer comrades" dies and when i shoot the enemy I do a oh yeah thought.  I'm hoping in real life I might react a bit differently even if i was in a real war.

However, the part that bugs me most is the way we all seem to run in to technology and appreciate it more than our real lives.  I agree with a lot of what the video gamer said, but i never hope to like fake sunrises more than real. It reminds me abit of the book Fahrenheit 451. Although written in the early 1950's Bradbury had a real grasp on where our society was headed in a few ways.  People gather to hop into the fake world over the real one.  I know we aren't burning books and firemen aren't setting fires, but part of this 451 does relate into this.

As a big video gamer I love and resent this video. I can't seem to hate al lthe new tech we have and I glady immerse myself in it more and more.  However, I do try to keep it somewhat in balance
