PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (WPIX)

The first in a series of charter flights will leave JFK International Airport for Haiti Saturday, carrying nearly 50 medical doctors from the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad.

The flight -- organized by the Church of Scientology -- will provide urgently needed care in the wake of Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude quake.

Teams of Scientology Volunteer Ministers from the U.S., Mexico and Europe will aid in search and rescue efforts, provide administrative and organizational support, and support medical teams.

The church will also provide large, yellow tents to be used as field hospitals, and trauma relief and counseling centers.

John Travolta To Airlift Desperately Needed E-Meters To Haiti (Defamer)
18 January 2010, 7:54 pm

Scientologists have mobilised to seize on the promotional and recruitment opportunities presented by the horror going on in Haiti, and John Travolta has personally arranged to fly “volunteer ministers” to Haiti to inflict his junk science on victims there.

Anywhere people are suffering, Scientology’s yellow-shirted “volunteer ministers” can be found lurking near news cameras and claiming to help people with their bullshit technology. They performed “purification rundowns” on recovery workers sifting through the ruins of the World Trade Centre after 9/11, administered “touch assists” to victims of the tsunami, distributed literature after the Virginia Tech shooting, and are on the ground in Haiti right now warning the starving, dehydrated populace about the dangers of psychiatry.

John Travolta is using his air miles to help the Haiti relief effort by planning a mercy mission to the earthquake ravaged nation.

The movie star and celebrity member of the Church of Scientology has become the latest big name to dig deep to help the victims of Tuesday’s 7.0-magnitude tremor.

He says, “I have arranged for a plane to take down some volunteer ministers and some supplies and some medics.

“I hope that inspires others as well. It’s needed.”

So precisely what does this desperately needed help consist of? To be fair, Scientology claims to have airlifted some actual medical professionals to Port-au-Prince, a move that is hard to argue with even if the doctors are cultists and are accompanied by a retinue of recruiters and glorified masseuses who are there not to help but to carry on their “crusade to build a better world,” as the website for the cult’s volunteer ministers program puts it, through the application of L. Ron Hubbard’s paranoid and power-mad fantasies.

Scientology takes lead role in Haiti relief effort - Merinews
20 January 2010, 7:03 am

Scientology takes lead role in Haiti relief effort
The Scientology Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response Team has taken the lead role in relief efforts after Haiti's devastating 7.0 earthquake. Trained to respond to emergency situations, they provide Touch Assists to immediately alleviate suffering.
Merinews

THE SCIENTOLOGY Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response Team has taken the lead role in relief efforts after Haiti's devastating 7.0 earthquake. Flying in from Clearwater, Florida to the hideous rubble of Port au Prince, capital of Haiti, the Response Team hit the ground running and immediately took charge.

The Volunteer Ministers' big yellow tent has become known as the place to visit for help with handling trauma, getting supplies, or just to find someone to talk to after grueling hours of arduous work in the disaster zone. The Volunteer Ministers are working closely in Haiti with the US Military, the United Nations, and many other agencies such as the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF, who are amazed by their calm expertise in the disaster zone. They are intensively training these agencies and organisations in ‘Touch Assists’. This technology, discovered by humanitarian L Ron Hubbard, provides a gentle massage when someone is in the midst of a crisis.

In addition to Touch Assists, the Volunteer Ministers have been offering free stress tests to rescue personnel and citizens alike.

Scientologists barred

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - A small group of Scientologists in bright yellow T-shirts tried to get into the city's main General Hospital but were turned away by U.S. troops guarding the door.

The soldiers let in only family members bringing food to patients already inside.

The Church of Scientology, better known for claiming to cure distress by ridding people of parasitic ghosts called thetans, says it sent doctors and nurses to Haiti to help medical teams and "provide spiritual first aid."

Kudos to the US Army!

I am all in favor of scientologists collecting needed items and sending non-monetary donations to Haiti through legitimate channels, and any other truly beneficial charitable acts they may engage in, but the last thing Haiti needs right now is a bunch of publicity seekers trying to take advantage of a disaster descending on them, using resources and distracting from the real work that needs doing.

They did the same thing after 9-11 in New York, even with the goal of getting in the way of those who were there to actually help, not to seek publicity, as shown in this intercepted email at http://www.xenu.net/archive/events/20010911-tragedy/:

Quote
Additionally we are trying to move in and knock the psychs out of counseling to the grieving families and that could take another 100 plus people right now. Due to some brilliant maneuvering by some simply genius Sea Org Members we tied up the majority of the psychs who were attempting to get to families yesterday in Q&A, bullbait and wrangling. They have a hard time completing cycles of action and are pretty easy to disperse. But today they are out in full force and circling like vultures over these people and all of our resources are tied up in the support efforts in the disaster zone at present.

More of the 9-11 story is at the link: http://www.xenu.net/archive/events/20010911-tragedy/

I had not seen that last quoted paragraph. Unbelievable. Bull-baiting is so helpful to everyone in a crisis!

Their attitude about the evil psychs is ludicrous.

  • I can haz ferret.
I believe other, similar, leaked info from gloating Scienos impeding actual workers at Ground Zero have been found.

Their usual M.O. is to show up with nothing in hand but Way to Happiness brochures and "touch assists", to accept supplies like food, water, toiletries, shelter, etc. that were intended for actual victims and paid for by legitimate aid organizations.

They have also been known to horn into "photo ops" by slipping up into the background while legitimate aid workers are bowing their heads in prayer or pretending to work hard in the foreground while holding props in clean hands and wearing crisp, pristine yellow Vulture Minister shirts with actual workers in sweaty, dirty, torn clothes toiling away in the background. These photos are shared with the undiscerning True Believers to convince them that all the money they were nagged and pressured to donate is actually being used to help people, and for photo ops.

If they can't get useful photo ops at a disaster site, don't worry...that'd be no problem! Arnie Lerma has shown previous examples of Scientology Photoshopping a pitifully small crowd at a C of S event into a slightly less embarrassing middle-sized crowd by using the clone tool poorly.

Remember, they are "expanding"! Why they need to import out-of-town Scienos to every event to bulk up the crowd size, count people as Scienos who merely took a stress test and got creeped out and bailed or who have been off the rolls for decades or who just sent in a Dianetics blow-in "tell me moar" card, Shoop crowd photos to imply there are more people attending than their are, stage photo ops and so on is something only a desperate True Believer can answer without saying "they lie--a LOT--about everything; and that 'everything' includes basic verifiable info such as 'how many Scienos are there, worldwide' (a fraction of the amount they claim--someone did the numbers and apparently they'd need 10,000(?) or so Scienos attached to every Org...anyone remember that?) and 'our Vulture Ministers are charitable helpers and totally don't get in the way of other aid organizations or leech off of supplies intended for victims or cynically pose for PR shots around real aid workers.'

Don't panic Haiti, the Scientologists are coming! - The Guardian
21 January 2010, 7:05 pm

The Guardian
Don't panic Haiti, the Scientologists are coming!

For our good friends from the church of L Ron, it's not so much a tragedy as an opportunity

Psychopath, conman, liar, fantasist, fraudster, bully, tax evader, megalomaniac – it's fair to say L Ron Hubbard's death was a blow to global humanitarianism. Happily, there is a silver lining to the cloud that has hung over Earth since the founder of Scientology shed his corporeal form in 1986. That silver- lining is the high profile, expansionist figures who represent his organisation today – and the good news is that they're turning their thoughts to Haiti.

Were an idiot like you to itemise the myriad things that this most wretched of disaster zones currently lacked, chances are you'd omit "militant Scientologists who claim post-traumatic stress is a conspiracy created by the evil psychiatric profession, and who believe the correct response to extreme shock is to touch sufferers with one finger, before attempting to convert them to the ways of Hubbard".

All I can say is, thank God for John Travolta. The Wild Hogs legend has unveiled his response to the unfolding crisis, announcing: "I have arranged for a plane to take down some Volunteer Ministers and some supplies and some medics." For the medics and supplies John must obviously be thanked, but for the Volunteer Ministers – arriving in Haiti via Air Travolta along with scores from other Scientology churches – the same cannot be said.

According to an official press release, the corps will be on hand to dispense "spiritual first aid" to Haitians. Because really, nothing should feel more appropriate right now than gadding about Port-au-Prince offering survivors the chance to be hooked up to an e-meter. Hopefully if they find any gay people, they can begin curing them.

For the Volunteer Ministers, you see, a tragedy is not so much a tragedy as a tragitunity.

But please, don't take Lost in Showbiz's word for it – take that of L Ron himself, who personally decreed the strategy he called "Casualty Contact", in which he advised Scientologists to scan newspapers for reports of accidents or bereavements, searching for "people who have been victimised one way or another by life".

Stipulating that one way to do this was to trawl hospitals, Hubbard declared of the ambulance-chasing Scientologist that, "He should represent himself . . . as a minister whose compassion was compelled by the newspaper story concerning the person [. . .] However, in handling the press he should simply say that it is a mission of the church to assist those who are in need of assistance. He should avoid any lengthy discussions of Scientology and should talk about the work of ministers and how all too few ministers these days get around to places where they are needed. It's straight recruiting!"

Combating the Tarzan effect in Haiti (New York Amsterdam News)
21 January 2010, 6:48 pm

“We are looking for the purity of motivation,” said Hazel Beckles, a Brooklyn-based activist. “While we are not condemning the good work that is happening in Haiti, we want a true depiction of what is happening in this junction in human history, one which is inclusive of everyone.”

Beckles echoes the opinion of those that there is a ‘Tarzan strategy’ in effect; a stringent selective protocol in place denying certain people access to assist in the desperately needed Haiti relief.

...

In the interest of Black folks helping Black folks on a continuum, the Bedford Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corp. landed on the ground in Haiti last weekend with 44 members: and joined up with others making a collective of 117 doctors, nurses, health care workers and paramedics. Another 30 are going down there on Saturday, said Rudolph Muhammad of the BSVAC. “They traveled with the Scientology Volunteer Ministers,” he told the AmNews.

Scientology Sends Ministers to Save Haitians
Newser

(Newser) – Any Haitians who feel a lack of L. Ron Hubbard's teachings in their lives are in luck. A 168-seater plane chartered by the Church of Scientology left for Haiti last night carrying medics, and some 80 volunteer ministers who will assist the injured with Scientology techniques and "spiritual first aid," said a statement from the organization. The mission is apparently being funded by Scientologist John Travolta. "I have arranged for a plane to take down some volunteer ministers, supplies and medics," said the actor.

Those techniques include "touch assist"—touching sufferers with one finger near their injury, and partial re-enactment of the trauma. The medical professionals will certainly be welcome, Marina Hyde writes in the Guardian. As for the rest, "nothing should feel more appropriate right now than gadding about Port-au-Prince offering survivors the chance to be hooked up to an e-meter," she scoffs. There is more information about Casualty Contact here: http://www.solitarytrees.net/cowen/misc/am3casu.htm

Here's part of it:
Quote
The essence of "Casualty Contact" is good filing and good personal appearance. One takes every daily paper he can get his hands on and cuts from it every story whereby he might have a preclear. He either has the address in the story itself or he gets the address as a minister from the newspaper. As speedily as possible he makes a personal call on the bereaved or injured person. It is probable that he will find on the first day that they are overly burdened with calls, since they have been a subject of the public press and he may find that in two or three days, interest in the person has cooled off to a point where his own appearance will admit of an actual interview. He should represent himself to the person or the person's family as a minister whose compassion [sic] was compelled by the newspaper story concerning the person.

Should have given those "some 80" seats that the volunteer ministers occupied to more doctors and medical professionals.  Injured and traumatized people don't need to be poked by scientologists hawking Way to Happiness booklets.

The Week Everyone Pitched In to Pretend to Help Haiti [Week In Review] (Gawker)
22 January 2010, 7:04 pm

This week: everyone took advantage of a crisis for their own gain, someone sold Gay Paradise, and a naked guy won America's heart (and higher legislative body).

Everyone was helping in Haiti. Especially John Travolta and his Scientologist Rescue Adventure team. And the Crusading CNN-ers. (Though they quickly became jaded.) Oh, and John Edwards! (Could we bring the refugees here and leave those people there, maybe?)

I cringe to think of what is being offered in "crisis counseling' by the volunteer ministers to those who may be at a very vulnerable point in their lives during this crisis in Haiti.

Scientologists ´Heal´ Haitian Quake Victims With the Touch of Their Hands - ShortNews.com
24 January 2010, 11:10 am

A group of Scientology "volunteer ministers" in bright yellow T-shirts has fanned out among the victims of the earthquake in Haiti and are claiming that they have the power to "reconnect" victims' nervous systems using the power of touch.

A wealthy donor contributed $400,000 to fly 80 such volunteers, along with 50 Haitian-American doctors, to Port-Au-Prince. "We use a process called 'assist' to follow the nervous system to reconnect the main points," a volunteer minister said.

"When you get a sudden shock to a part of your body the energy gets stuck, so we re-establish communication within the body," the volunteer said. A U.S. doctor who's heard of the practice said, "I didn't know touching could heal gangrene."

Boarding Mixup Grounds Medical Mission To Haiti - NY1
24 January 2010, 11:14 am

A plane chartered Saturday by members of the Church of Scientology was supposed to bring a group of volunteers to Haiti via JFK Airport. Yet, due to a chaotic boarding process, about 70 doctors, nurses and translators were left behind.

"I think they're doing a good thing. But it wasn't done right today and people have died in Haiti because of it," said volunteer Jake Bevilacqua.

"They need to help us get these pain medications and equipment and antibiotics to the people who are dying, literally," said volunteer Doreen Evans.

Doctors and nurses from as far away as Brazil arrived at JFK Saturday morning with thousands of dollars worth of medicine and medical equipment. They say they were confirmed on the Church of Scientology flight, but during the boarding process they say the passenger manifest was misplaced.

A total of 119 people boarded then the doors of the plane closed, leaving about 70 people behind. The church was worried
the plane would miss its landing slot in Haiti, but the volunteers complained the plane sat at the gate for at least another hour.

"We had people coming late. We had people whose names weren't on the manifest. Maybe the administration was not exactly correct. Maybe we should focus on the 119 people who were on that plane and did get down to Haiti," said John Carmichael of the Church of Scientology.

Cedar Rapids Disaster Specialist Teahen Heads to Haiti, with Actor John Travolta (KCRG-TV9 Cedar Rapids)
25 January 2010, 6:08 pm

CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids’ Peter Teahen — disaster specialist, funeral director and recent candidate for the U.S. Congress — is flying into disaster-hit Haiti this evening with actor John Travolta and a medical contingent in Travolta’s jet.

The disaster-relief effort is being sponsored by the Church of Scientology, of which Travolta is a member, Teahen said from a cab Monday afternoon on his way to the Clearwater, Fla., airport.

Teahen, who is not a Scientologist, said the church has come to play a bigger and bigger role in disaster relief both internationally and in the United States. Teahen said he first met Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, in Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Jonh Travolta Disguising Scientology Recruit Mission As Haitian Emergency Support (DimeWars)
26 January 2010, 12:21 pm

Actor John Travolta has recently landed his own jet in Haiti allegedly carrying relief supplies and a team including doctors and Scientology ministers. The 55-year-old actor flew the Boeing 707 from Florida on Monday carrying 4 tons of ready-to-eat military rations and medical supplies for earthquake victims. The Church of Scientology says his self and his wife plan to return home after unloading their passengers and supplies.

Now, we commend anyone who delivers help to people in need, however, Scientology ministers is not what the Haitians need right now. We KNOW that much. Haiti is a country rich with its own religious ideas, beliefs and values. Why the need to push another religion? Talk about kicking a man when he's down..
