Narconon Deaths
« on: August 22, 2009, 22:34 »
Narconon has been widely criticized for its dangerous detox ritual.  Some have given up their lives instead of the drugs.

Pius Keel, a confirmed Scientologist of 22, ended his stay at the Schliersee tragically. He got himself into deep debt for his community. After some time at Narconon he complained to his mother about the barefaced swindle. Narconon is only about money, he said. On September 14, 1990, after less than two months at Narconon, Pius packed his bags and threw himself under a train.

TACENO (Lecco)  - "Why don't you say instead that we saved 1.200 people from drugs?" Angela, an assistant of the Narconon community in Taceno, Valsassina, protests.

Last night another guest of the center, the second,  died at the hospital in Lecco. Paride Ella, 22 from Grassobbio (Bergamo), ceased to live after a 5 days agony. He had similar symptoms - vomit and diarrhoea - as the ones felt by Giuseppe Tomba, 26 from Solaro (Milano). But for him there even wasn't enough time to call a doctor.

The <<dianetic>> community - rehabilitation from drugs through purification courses, vitamins and minerals <<to get rid from negative entities>> - is not provided with medical service, and the doctor of the village just established that Giuseppe's heart wasn't beating anymore. The two young men were at the beginning of the therapeutic path, the vitamins phase.

This excerpt is from the French Parliamentary Report on Cults of 1995.
-----------------------------------
The County Court of Dijon, in a judgement of January 9, 1987 (No 118-87), condemned the assistant-director of the Narconon center of Grangey-sur-Ource for lack of assistance to a person in danger. This center, created by the Church of Scientology, proposes cures of detoxication by applying the methods of Ron Hubbard, namely the "purification rundown", based mainly on several hours of sauna per day, "auditing" and a significant absorption of vitamins.

In this case, the victim was a long time epileptic and had been addressed to this
organization because she wished "to be released from the drugs". The center, without preliminary medical examination, placed her in a room of "weaning". However, the medical expertises showed that the death was due to "a state of epileptic seizures due to the absence of sufficient handling in its beginning and emergency treatment during the seizures."

The judgement does not leave any doubt about the responsibility of the center...

'STUDENT' COMMITS SUICIDE DURING CRIMINON DRUG REHAB DETOX

CODY BATES hanged himself at the San Francisco SBDC New Life Center Criminon facility on August 27, 2008. He'd been admitted to the facility on August 24th and began detox the next day. During the first day of detox, he had been administered medication with known side effects that included suicidal ideation to help facilitate the detox. Cody's mother thought he was under medical care and asked SBDC New LIfe Staff to provide 24 hr suicide watch of Cody because of statements he made to staff indicating he might commit suicide. The staff promised to keep a watchful eye but did not follow through and Cody was found on the 27th to have committed suicide. Apparently there was no medical personnel at the facility either.

Here is legal complaint filed by the victim's mother. I hope she sues the hell out of them:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FdNd4J3qxoM/SHaITQ4PAKI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/do6dQuXcuaE/s1600-h/SBDC_Complaint_amended_Final_pg4.jpg

Cody's parents ( the father joining in soon after the mother filed) sued for for negligence and wrongful death among othere things, and rightfully so. Her lawyer has been informed of the fact that the facility is not licensed by CA ADP despite the Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE) press release about this place ( one of 5 or so 'facilities' operated in Single Room Occupancy Hotels in the City of San Francisco.)

The case was settled in arbitration. It was a nightmare for the family but this is what Scientology and it's front groups like SBDC New Life Center SF do to discourage lawsuits. Shame on them for this.

Over at the Suppressive Person Defense League I found a story about this front group scam from scientology's front group coordinator called ABLE:

"The center has also been granted their license as a drug and alcohol recovery center by the California State Department of Drug and Alcohol. It now operates at an average of 50 students on the program at a time, and the center is still expanding — now having control of over 200 beds throughout 4 hotels in the area." http://www.able.org/news/

Here is their current website: http://www.newlifecentersf.org
Director and scientologist Richard Prescott owns http://SOMANEWLIFECENTER.Org

This is CLEARLY a Scientology program, incorporating the NarCONon drug rehab with the Criminon ' LIfe Skills.

Not surprisingly, neither San Francisco New Life Center, SOCIAL BETTERMENT DEVELOPMENT COMPANY or SBDC New Life are licensed by the California Alcohol and Drug Program, despite promoting that they are via the Facility locator at the federal governemnt site SAMHSA

Global Locator - ABLE International

www.able.org/contact/global-locator/?groups=criminon

Global Locator - Criminon Groups Around the World
...San Francisco New Life Center..info@somanewlifecenter.org

Richard Prescott is the main culprit in running this large scale detox program without a license. He also reported falsely to the federal facility locator site that it was licensed by ADP. He's currently being sued along with SBDC and related parties. May Cody Bates rest in peace.

Thanks, Mary.

How unfortunate the whyaretheydead.info site linked above in my posts is not working.  Wonder why that is?

I've added alternate links to my posts above, and started a thread for archiving articles of importance to us.

Hello. My name is Cody Bates. I was apart of the original indictment that first landed Jon in jail. His co-defendant to be exact. Now that my legal troubles are behind me, I feel that I can have more of an out right voice as one of Jon's home base supporters. There are few people in the world today who mean more to me than our friend Jon does. He, long ago, surpassed the title of friend to me and became my brother. I'm sure most of you know of the torturous underworld that Jon became apart of once he was arrested; however Jon was not alone. In the beginning I was physically there with him. Jon makes no exaggeration of the conditions of the Arizona legal system. NONE. Joe Arpaio is riding the crest of a dehumanizing wave of facism. We are all lesser people for allowing Arpaio to stay in power.

My thoughts turn to Jon on this Fourth of July Day because it was on this day in 1994 that I lost my oldest brother, Rick. I was 17 at the time and if he were alive today he would be 42. Not long after his death I wrote a little something that I call "Brotherhood." I've shared it with Jon and I will end by sharing it here today.

    Brotherhood
Written on 11.9.94 in memory of Rick Bates 7.4.94

In the name of truth I ask no more.
In the vain of youth there is a common core.
That has no name and bares no soul,
yet a heart pumping blood black as coal.
As cold as ice the fire burns on.
No trust in God, my faith is gone.
So much evil enslaves the good.
Alone I fall, alone I stood.
    I have no fear
nor feel the love I should,
and believe in only one thing
    Brotherhood.

My husband and I were longtime friends of Cody's. My husband went to high school with him. He is the poet and respondent in the blogs. The blogs are really Shaun Attwood, author of the recently released Hard Times book. Still a friend of ours. The New Times Phoenix did the breaking story where you can read about them.
Cody & his girlfriend were heroin addicts who came to us for help. In the beginning I was able to contact the show Intervention who agreed to help.
It was the only way to get them to a good detox facility. But Cody backed out. So next we took them into our home & readjusted our 3 boy's rooms. For 5 weeks we cared for them, took them to family, fed them, stayed with them through detox. After 5 weeks we requested their family step in, as they were now clean. But their family didn't provide what the two needed as far as support & they began using within a week of leaving us. They returned to pick up their things, treating us badly. But it was the drugs. We still loved them and constantly wondered about them. No one would answer our calls.
Then came the horrifying day in August when Lisa, his girlfriend, called with the news. I still get knots in my stomach and tears in my eyes when I think about them...if we had more room in our house, a bigger income.
Cody was an aspiring director, his idol being Martin Scorscese. His half written book probably lost, never to be published, Lisa never contacted us again.
we didn't go to the funeral. Too much to handle emotionally. But we miss them everyday & pray his torment is over & he's at peace.

Thank you so much for posting about Cody.  So often we hear stories of the people harmed by the scientology front groups, and by scientology itself, but after the fact, and us not having known them during their life, sometimes there is very little information that shows the person behind the statistics - that these "statistics" were very real people with other real people who loved them despite their problems, people with holes left in their hearts that nothing can fill, when they're gone.

I know it must have been painful for you to write this; I started to cry as I read it.  I want you to know how much we appreciate your taking the time to write it, and I hope it may be of some comfort to you that your bravery in telling it may save someone else from a similar fate.

Cody was a lucky man to have you and your husband as friends.  He is at peace now, Daisy, I just know it.

If you don't mind me asking, do you know how Cody came to be at Criminon?  Was he sent by a court, or was it a personal decision?

Ethercat, the program was not called Criminon, per se. It was one of those run by Richard E Prescott, former Narconon Northern California director, called Social Betterment Development Company aka New Life center SF. They paid royalties to CRIMINON and ABLE International to provide the courses. They have other services they provide in addition to the Narconon/Criminon rehab detox courses.

It's a $ 15,000 outpatient program run out of hotel rooms and another building in San Francisco which are rented out by SBDC to the victims. I do not know if the courts were involved but I don't believe they were. I do know that Cody's mother found the program when she was referred by one of the fake referral web sites trying to sell her Narconon Arrowhead. She was referred there by Narconon grad and infamous interventionist Holly Conklin ( Intervention Angel ) who was on both Arrowhead's and SBDC's payroll as an intake specialist. Holly lied about the program, saying it had medical services and supervision when it didn't. As the court complaint states, Cody required medical detox and SBDC is not licensed to provide that so the facility took him offsite for initial exam and medication prescription to detox off the drug he was addicted to at SBDC's site. That was a fatal mistake.  Suicide is a side effect of the medicine he was put on and despite promising the family they would supervise him 24/7 while on it, he was left alone and committed suicide during withdrawal. SBDC did not supervise Cody while he was detoxing, nor did they provide appropriate care that the medication requires. It was a terrible and preventable tragedy. I would not send my worst enemy to New Life Center SF.

I am not at liberty to discuss this further, as I promised the family the peace they deserved after a terribly upsetting time and court mediation when they sued SBDC and Prescott. I mention the above so that you know how he came to be in the program.

Dear Daisy, So sorry for your loss and thwaryted efforts. Being in the rehab business can be so disappointing sometimes because no matter how much you care or help, only the addict can help himself in the end. Your hearts were in the right place. Cody did eventually go to willingly to rehab and I am sure you and your husband had alot to do with starting the ball rolling on that. He wasn't ready at that time. Nothing new when it comes to an addict. You can only do what you can to help others. It's the snakes in the business who do more harm than good. Unfortunately, Cody and his family were deceived by a front group of the biggest con game of the last century. I hope to close them down before more harm comes to others.

Are you still running a rehab?

We didn't run a rehab; we just tried to care for our friend in our home. For our part, we consider ourselves as successful as we could be in our situation. There were better, cheaper, well qualified places his mother could have sent him. Why she chose them @ 3x the cost is puzzling to us when cost was an issue. She lives a heartbreaking life as 2 of her 4 children have committee suicide. I am even further baffled at the judges decision to throw the case out. Was he receiving financial compensation? So many questions still remain.

My sincerest regards to you, Daisy and to all the other people who knew and loved Cody.

Love, Sekh. @->-->---

Reading this topic I remembered a fairly recent case of someone dying at Narconon in Zutphen, Holland too. I copied an English translantion of the Dutch article from ESMB.(Thanks, AnonKat). Another one for the list that is already far to long.

Quote
Dead of a woman hits hard at Narconon

by Jenny Polman. Monday, October 15, 2007 | 5:23 | Last updated: Monday, March 1, 2010 | 1:56 p.m.

ZUTPHEN - Director Joanna Kluessien of private rehab Narconon Zutphen does not exclude anything when it comes to the unexpected death of the 30-year-old Laura, Friday.

Even that the woman, despite all the restrictions, has managed drug smuggling into center at the Deventerweg. "That is the horribility of it this," said a clearly disthraught Kluessien that has broken of a study tour to Denmark to be accessible for residents and relatives.

Laura - the fictitious name out of respect for the survivors - already spent eight months at Narconon rehab program and could well cope. "She ate well and even came gained weight, she slept well, was energetic and very helpful," said Daan Reinstra, public relations officer of Narconon, about the woman who was found dead friday morning in her bed. The cause of death is still unknown, but Kleussien and Reinstra do not exclude a drug-related cause. "Residents can be under guide going to the city but you can not people here 24 hours a day. The doors are always open and the stuff is everywhere available."

Narconon will seize the tragic incident for an even more intensive campaign against drugs. "We want to spread more information about what drugs can do. Because it is easier to deter youth from the start than getting them to stop using it. You can not warn children young enough. Its use seems increasingly to be accepted in our society, it looks stranger not to take pills than not. We're going to fight harder to eradicate drug use. Something like this should never happen again, we will do anything to make that happen. "

For the other (25) residents of Narconon is the death of Laura, a harsh lesson, says Kluessien. "They're shaken, talk about it a lot. They are back to face the facts. We also state." Laura initially used heroin, speed, and later subotex (pills), until she ended up at Narconon. Whether she was completely clean Kluessien dare not say.

Kluessien is very pleased with the way the Zutphen police dealing with the death of Laura. "Very thorough and compassionate. They want to get to the bottom too about what led to her dead. That is what we want. And if becomes clear she used something weonly hope that the person who the stuff was from is picked up." That has to be a Zutphen dealer acording to Kluessien . The residents spend a few days in their own way of attention to the death of Laura, who will be buried in Greece - her country of origin - . "We're going to make a flower arrangement and will have a rememberance with a selected group people.

Apparently this lady had spent 8 months at Narconon, and the director wasn't sure if she was really clean. After 8 months in rehab one should be clean, right? Specially if the program normally only takes three months. This makes me presume she was a student-turned-staffmember living there. A foreign national, probably with drugs- or other crimes on her record would never get a working permit, specially in a rehab-facility. No working permit, no legal stay in the country after three months. Only prolonged treatment would be a reason to legally extend her stay in Holland. So they passed her of as a student to the police.

Nobody stays that long, except staff-members. But having illegal staff-members dying on drug overdoses in your center will immediately end your valuable contract with the Justice Department to resocialize convicts. Trouble-trouble, puzzle-puzzle. What would Hubbard do?
Find an acceptable truth, like "she was still a student here". Well done, Joanna! {=lies=}

This is not the first time somebody died there. Somewhere in the nineties there was another case, a Dutch girl. But I don't remember the details on that one. Still, I hope this info is useful.

Hi Daisy, I have no idea what you are talking about. The case was settled, not thrown out. The rehab fee was charged for supposed 6 months residential and detox treatment that was to include professional medical care and vocational guidence so that Cody could be prepared to enter the workforce after rehab. The facility lied about it's program and that appropriate medical care and supervision were included when it wasn't. The medication he was on, the manner of detox, the  lack of medical and other care of supervision is what contributed to his death. Read the complaint again:
http://webaccess.sftc.org/minds_asp_pdf/Viewer/DownLoadDocument.asp?PGCNT=0&ALL=Y

While it is obvious that your intentions are good, you are, never the less,  running an illegal rehab. This kind of situation could happen in your program but I sure hope it doesn't.

Cody' mother was dedicated to helping her son and she was deceived SBDC aka  by New Life Center San Francisco. You seem to have some issues with her and I suggest you take them up with her personally. This is not the place to be pointing fingers at a grieving mother.

I misread and/or misunderstood the papers. We're not qualified nor do we claim to be in the world of rehab and detox. We had a friend we love dearly who begged for our help. We do not run any kind of rehab at all. As I said, we did our best to care for our friend and even worked at gathering funds to send him to a qualified facility. We've never had the need or opportunity to help anyone else. While in our home, we were in constant contact with community services.
I do thank you for posting the link for me to read for clarification.
As far as our relationship with his mother, we have no personal issue or contact with her. We felt as though she condemned us for our involvement, although she didn't know us personally and maybe assumed we were contrubuing to his addiction. I am certainly not pointing fingers. It saddens me how she was duped. No amount of compensation will ever replace the Cody we all knew as the solid friend, loving, open-minded, debating, life of the conversation.  We love him and miss him dearly.

Thanks for clarifying again, Daisy.  Maybe it's possible that Mary received some misinformation about your role as Cody's friend.  I hope she will consider that possibility.  Thank you for trying to help him.

All too often, Narconon offers ridiculously low settlements for people's losses or damages and puts enormous pressure on people to accept them.  None of us will ever know how we would respond personally unless we are placed in such a situation.  Peace to all involved.
