Former Ga. Lawmaker, Husband Found Dead

Wasn't  former Sen Nancy Schaefer a CCHR backer of sorts?

HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. (MyFOX ATLANTA) - The bodies of former state senator Nancy Schaefer and her husband, Bruce were found Friday at their Habersham County home. Both had been shot.

The announcement was made around 7:30 p.m. Friday on the floor of the Georgia General Assembly.

Six GBI agents were at the home investigating at the request of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Department.

The preliminary investigation is looking at the case as a murder-suicide, but Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesperson John Bankhead did not have further details.
"Preliminarily, it looks like a murder-suicide," said Bankhead.

Schaefer, 73, was a former Atlanta mayoral candidate, as well as a two-term state senator who represented the 50th District.

Schaefer left the general assembly after losing a north Georgia Republican runoff in 2008.

Schaefer founded Family Concerns, Inc. in 1986. The non-profit foundation focused on opposition to abortion and gay marriage and fought for the public display of the Ten Commandments in public buildings.

State Rep. Rick Austin announced Schaefer’s death to a packed House chamber Friday night and led lawmakers in a moment of silence.

I believe you are correct, ST.

Does it need to be pointed out that psychiatry might have helped Bruce Schaefer, and prevented this tragic ending?

I wonder: how many lives have been saved by modern psychiatric medicine? The statistics I have read in magazines like Science News, Discover, and Scientific American, indicate that the successful outcome rates for Doctors using both conventional talk-therapy methods and psychiatric medicines massively eclipses those of either method by itself. I can easily think of at least a couple people I know who are being helped by Psychiatry, and I bet you can too...

Do we know for a fact that it was Bruce, not Nancy, that shot his/her spouse and them him/herself?

I know that is usually how it goes, but the article doesn't indicate who shot who.

I heard on the news that he shot her, then himself.  I don't know how they know something like that (position of the gun, I guess), and I also don't know how accurate the news is, but that's what I heard.

And yes, about Nancy and CCHR: how ironic in a not funny kind of way, kinda like Elle Perkins.

It would seem a little difficult to kill yourself, then shoot someone else...

And gunshot residue. Position of the weapon in question is dubious since it can be moved around after the fact but crime scene tech can swab and stuff for residue to see who shot the weapon.  Chances are if it is a murder/suicide only one of them should have it lingering on them in a manner that suggests usage.  Seems awfully quick for them to know for sure yet though.

Blood spatter, body position(s), and trajectory of the bullet(s) also come into play along with ballistics / GSR.

Not that I'm suggesting that it happened in this case, but such things have been staged to look this way before.

I was thinking along those same lines, Ethercat.  I won't say I believe it is necessarily a set-up, but I do know things have been made to look like accidents in the past.

At the same time, if she and her husband had realized Scientology's true nature, I know it would have taken a great toll on them -- especially if they tried to leave the cult and that was followed up by threats and intimidation, as is common in Scientology.  It's easy to surmise, in this instance, that they may have been pushed beyond their limits of knowing exactly what to do, and felt helpless and hopeless.

But then there's no telling exactly what happened here.
