Scientology behind on rent in Amsterdam - Examiner.com
4 May 2010, 12:25 pm

Scientology is behind on their rent. Libra International has filed interim injunction procedures against the Church of Scientology, according to Dutch daily The Telegraaf. Libra demands that the religious organization clear the building at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and pays its bill. How much debt has Scientology's Amsterdam office incurred? Approximately $103,000.Scientology Amsterdam behind on rent

This isn't the first time that Libra has taken legal action against Scientology for past due bills. Libra's attorney says, "Sometimes it takes a while but until now they have always eventually paid up. The interim injunction is simply a way to compel the church to comply.

According to local TV station AT5, Scientology isn't concerned about the bill. "We're busy with more important things, such as a project to help 11-year-old children to beat their addiction to drugs." A court ruling is expected on Thursday, where a judge may decide that the organization's priorities need to be adjusted.

With about 500 followers in the Netherlands, Scientology does not enjoy great public affection. In addition to having had financial trouble for years, Scientology lost a long battle against freedom of speech in that country.

How long before they start claiming that having to pay their rent is "religious discrimination"?

Are they considered a religion in the Netherlands?

In addition to having had financial trouble for years, Scientology lost a long battle against freedom of speech in that country.

They must be referring to the lawsuit against Karin Spaink in 1995: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kspaink/cos/verweng.html

When is the deadline for paying up and getting out of the building? Doesn't appear to be a "pay up OR get out" situation, nor a "continue NOT to pay but be able to stay without consequences" situation, either.

Sounds like the building management is convinced that they will pay when enough pressure is put on them legally.  I haven't found any updates though.

That's part of how their Dateline Payment plan works" Don't pay until something is about to be shut off/taken away, and then pay just enough to keep it.
