MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Fox 13 has found the house of Donna Lee Wray, the widow of Jerry Kane and stepmother to Joe Kane. The same house where the two accused cop killers spent their last three months...

Many neighbors had assumed Joe and Jerry were friends from the Church Of Scientology, just there to help clean up the house. They say Wray is or was a scientologist...

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Tuesday night, the wife of an accused cop killer suspect told a 911 operator that she was inside her house and armed. She called 911 to say she was being harassed by a Memphis reporter. Fox 13 Reporter Lauren Lee was in Florida and filed this report.

Police left the home of Donna Wray, the widow of the accused West Memphis gunman Jerry Kane. An officer told Fox 13 reporter Lauren Lee, she called 911 because the media had been harassing her and told police she was armed inside her home.

Fox 13 has spoken on the phone several times with Kane’s widow and she says she has doubt about the version of events provided by the Arkansas State Police.

Kane and his 16-year-old son are accused of gunning down two West Memphis police officers and wounding two other officers in the shoot out that followed at the West Memphis Wal-Mart.

A sign on Wray’s door says her entire family was massacred and she will be sending out a news release on her position. Longtime neighbors of Wray’s said they are not surprised by this behavior.

They said they didn't know the Kanes well, but that federal agents had come by Monday questioning neighbors.

"They showed me a pic of each of the suspects accused in the shootings and asked me if I recognized either one of them," said neighbor Carrie Clark.

Father, son in Arkansas cop killings were headed home to Clearwater

By Jamal Thalji, Times Staff Writer

The antigovernment activist and his teen son who ambushed and killed two officers and wounded two others in an Arkansas shooting spree Thursday were on their way home to Clearwater.

The father and son, Jerry Kane Jr. 45, and his 16-year-old son, Joseph, died in a subsequent gunbattle with police. A website memorializing the two is asking for donations to bury their bodies in Florida.

Arkansas police blame the Kanes for killing West Memphis Police Sgt. Brandon Paudert, 39, and Officer Bill Evans, 38, after a traffic stop alongside Interstate 40 around 11:30 a.m.

Father and son died 90 minutes later, according to police, killed in a ferocious shootout in a Walmart parking lot that left Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby and Deputy Chief W.A. Wren wounded.

But Clearwater resident Donna Wray, who says she became Kane's common-law wife three months ago, said she doesn't believe the police account of the shooting — or the media's depiction of her common-law husband's political beliefs.

Florida hasn't recognized common-law marriages since 1968.

"I consider there to be a lot of similarities to this and Ruby Ridge," she said, referring to the deadly 1992 standoff in Idaho between Randall Weaver and federal agents that left his wife and teen son and a U.S. marshal dead.

"The blatant, outright things that have been printed about him being a right-wing extremist have absolutely no basis whatsoever," Wray said. "He cared for everyone, no matter the color of their skin."

So what did Kane believe in? "That every city, every county, every state, every level of the federal government are for-profit corporations," Wray said, and Kane "removed himself from the corporate entity that calls itself a government."

Father, son accused of killing West Memphis cops were coming to Clearwater

Jerry Kane, 45, and his son Joseph, 16, crisscrossed the country educating people about mortgage fraud and how to keep their homes.

They were scheduled to facilitate a two-day seminar in Safety Harbor beginning next Saturday.

But on Thursday, they were gunned down after a routine traffic stop turned into a bloodbath that left two West Memphis, Ark., officers dead and two other top law enforcement authorities wounded.

The toll from the gunbattles was the greatest suffered by Memphis-area law enforcement agencies in a single day, according to the Commercial Appeal in nearby Memphis, Tenn.

I haven't read the accusations about it, but skin color has nothing to do with extremist conservatism in the way of wanting the government to cease existing.

THAT is right wing extremism.  Many conservatives believe in a small government, but not to the extent this guy did.

Game warden recalls horrific day in West Memphis

MARIANNA —

Game Warden Mike Neal, recalled his experiences in a shootout on the West Memphis WalMart parking lot following the shooting deaths of two West Memphis Police officers at the Marianna Rotary Club Monday.

The role of a game warden goes far beyond that of issuing tickets to hunters and fishermen for being over the limit. The officer could be thrust into a life- threatening situation outside the usual confines of a lake, duck blind or deer stand.

No one knows that more than Mike Neal who risked his life in crashing his state issued pickup into a van occupied by two gun-wielding assailants who claimed the lives of two West Memphis Police officers.

“The whole incident lasted only 90 minutes from the first traffic stop on I-40 to the time they were taken down,” Neal said Monday during a luncheon talk before the Marianna Rotary Club.
Two West Memphis Police officers were gunned down by the assailants, Jerry Kane, 44, and son, Joseph Kane, 16, during a traffic stop. Neal, who has been an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission law enforcement officer for three years, presented a video that recapped the final minutes on a parking lot at Wal-Mart.

“They shot 18 rounds and I shot back 30 rounds,” Neal said of his close encounter with the assailants as he crashed his truck into the side of the gunmen’s van.

The gunmen had just fired upon Crittenden County Sheriff Richard Busby and Chief Deputy W.A. Wren in their vehicle wounding both. Neal said his concern was that after he rammed his pickup into the driver’s side of the van his own vehicle would still be drivable allowing him to go in reverse before the assailants could return fire. Neal said subduing the Kanes prevented further bloodshed.

“Had they been able to get out of their van and go into the Wal-Mart it could have been a lot worse,” Neal said.

After Neal’s daring action against the gunmen’s vehicle, a number of lawmen converged on the parking lot firing a barrage that claimed the gunmen’s lives.

Neal said he learned that that Joseph Kane was home schooled and was very devoted to his father, a convicted felon who had an outstanding warrant from New Mexico for carrying a large quantity of marijuana and an illegal firearm – both of which would have sent him back to prison.

“The boy fought to the death to protect his dad,” Neal said.

Neal said game wardens have the same authority as state troopers.

“I was trained to shoot through the windows of our vehicles,” Neal said.

Neal said he saw Jerry Kane “face-to-face” and “disengaged” the assailant from his weapon with his shots.

Many people, seeing their immediate family members killed after allegedly murdering two police officers, might retreat into pained silence. Some might even find a way to express their condolences to the officers’ loved ones.
