Yet another narconon "success" story
« on: September 06, 2010, 13:51 »
I ran across this thread on a recovery forum: Very Troubled Mother

Aileen, 74 years old, posted on September 21, 2007 about her 41 year old son, who was addicted to drugs, and doing illegal things to get money.  Her family and others advised her to turn him in, let the legal system order him into rehab, but she couldn't bring herself to do that and see him go to prison.

By October 10, 2007, she had had enough that she told him to leave her home:

I have reached the point of telling my son to leave. It is the hardest thing I've ever had to do. As a mother, you naturally worry about your children - are they hungry, are they cold. I know this is the best thing to do, but why does it make me feel so God-awful!

On December 1, 2007, she posted this:

I have given my son three choices: 1)go to rehab; 2)go to jail, or 3)detox himself and get a job. I realize this is "too" lenient, but I have to start somewhere. Of course, he opted for the third choice, but guess who's buying the Soboxin off the street - yep, me!  But, while he was working and had insurance, he went to a doctor who perscribed Soboxin and it helped him. ...  He is into his sixth day of detox - we will see. However, I have a copy of the check he forged, and have told him I will go directly to the police station and present it to them if he does not follow through with his detox and stay off drugs. It's "show and tell" time, and I'm convinced (at last) that jail is his only recourse if this doesn't work.

My son is set to go into rehab this next week. First, he is going into a detox center (or that's what it sounds like to me). Then he plans to enter another program (which he can only enter after detoxification). There is what seems to be a wonderful place in Georgia called Narconon. They have an addictologist who believes the entire body needs to be cleansed; that drugs hang on to certain parts of the body even after detox, which leads to more cravings. It almost sounds like "colon cleansing" to me (lol). The problem is, they charge from 7 to 11,000. Who has that kind of money?!! Where do they expect addicts who haven't worked to get this kind of money. I'm afraid these detox places are just that - detox only. I believe drugs screw up the entire body, mind, etc., and must be cleansed completely before a person does not crave drugs anymore. Sounds reasonable to me. All we parents can do is hope...and pray.

Another member gave her a lukewarm warning:

Not knocking Narconon, but thought you might want to know that they are strongly affiliated with the Church of Scientology, in case that matters to you.

But January 16, 2008:

I took my son to rehab on Monday morning. As we were saying goodbye, he said, "Mom, the nest time you see me I'll be clean." He will then go to another rehab center for the "social" part of detox. All I can do is hope!

March 20, 2008:
(Note that this is after the Narconon of Georgia program, which he must have left early, since it usually lasts longer than 2 months.)

My son is in real trouble, and I'm so scared! He used a neighbor's credit card and she has filed fraud charges. We are waiting for him to be picked up by the police. I don't know what to expect -- all I know is that I'm so afraid for him.

And finally, on February 15, 2009, one year later:

My son is dead.  They say it was a breakin and a boy hit my son on the head with a heater and killed him. I am absolutely and totally devasted. I know what they say is not true. First of all, Matt had frequented this house many times and had, I'm sure, purchased OxyContin from the woman.   ...more...

These types of stories are Narconon's unpromoted "success" stories.
