Why I've not been around much lately
« on: August 30, 2009, 12:22 »
Sorry I have not been doing much posting lately, but I've been dealing with some important family issues that keep me busy and away from the net a lot.

My grandmother had cataract surgery, following which her strength was diminished and her dementia was heightened.  Not strong enough to return home with Grandpa, we moved he into a nursing home to continue her recovery.  This home did not have an Alzheimer/dementia ward, so for the last few weeks I and some other family took turns so she would have someone with her 24/7 to watch her (she doesn't usually remember that she can't walk alone right now).  In my humble, non-medically-trained opinion, she was making good progress.

Thursday, after finally finding a nursing home with an Alzheimer/dementia ward which said they could provide the level of supervision needed, we moved her to the new facility.  Saturday, at 2:30 in the afternoon, Grandma fell and broke her hip while in their care.  She's in the hospital most of my family uses, and we'll have to wait and see what the plan is after she gets through whatever treatment/therapy they can provide.

As soon as possible, I hope to become once again more active on this board, and I want to thank everyone who's working so hard to make it a success.

peace,
Chef

It's good to see you, Chef.  I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother's troubles, but she's lucky (actually, I don't think it's luck, it's something else) to have a caring family to see to her needs.  I hope she will recover from the broken hip without complications.  I know it must be difficult for your Grandpa too, so I'm also sending my best wishes to him and the rest of your family, as well as to you.

I think I can speak for everyone here when I say we look forward to having you back on the forum, but family takes precedence over most everything else, and that is as it should be.  Hope Grandma ChefXenu gets well soon.

Sorry to hear about your Grandma, Chef.

From what I understand, a surgery for someone with dementia can sometimes exacerbate the problem.

It looks like there is some good information on this site if you are unfamiliar with it:

Best wishes to you and your family.
