Strangely enough, I knew about Eckankar before I knew about Scientology. Even more strange: I learned about it through a notable figure.

There is a documentary I saw called Standing in the Shadows of Motown. It was about The Funk Brothers, the backing band for most of Motown's hits between 1959-1972. One of the members was a guitarist by the name of Robert White. He joined Eckankar before he died in 1994.

As an offshoot of Scientology, there are similarities to it as well. Of course, for all the bad and silly things about it, it is STILL not as bad as Scientology. In my state, it is more successful than Scientology. Strange that a suppressive group would outperform them so.  :)

@RSW; I know that documentary, even owe a copy of it. I don't really remember White  ooo:/ speaking about this group, but I'll watch the DVD once more.

Which is not a big punishment, cause the music is fantastic. I loved those guys.
