Narconon Drug Rehab Educates Children, Parents at County Fair

Posted on: Wednesday, 23 September 2009, 18:25 CDT

ATLANTA, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Narconon Drug Rehab Georgia has taken drug education to a new level - to the local county fair. While most adult attendees of the fair were interested in the arts and crafts, winning a prize at the concession stands, or seeing who won the 4-H events, they also wanted to know what was in the Narconon Georgia Drug Education Booth.

Visitors were not disappointed in the colorful display. Children signed a pledge promising to remain drug-free and study hard in school, while adults learned about the signs of drug abuse and how to talk to their kids about drugs. After signing the drug-free pledge the kids got a free toy and parents left armed with literature.

"Many of the adults who stop by are grateful to learn about prescription drug abuse and how easy it is for children to become addicted to medicine found in the family medicine cabinet," commented Gordy Weinand, spokesperson for Narconon Drug Rehab Georgia. "The kids learn a lot about the dangers of drug abuse, sign our drug-free pledge, and get a prize. We have a lot of fun, while teaching a serious topic at the same time."

As studies show, drug abuse of hard street drugs is on the decline while prescription drug abuse is a growing problem that if not halted will be at epidemic proportions.

"It seems that more and more news stories are about a celebrity dying of prescription drug addiction or being treated for it," comments Mr. Weinand. "Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, Burt Reynolds, people you would never imagine having a problem with prescription drugs are finding themselves in trouble because they didn't know any better. We aim to change that."

This is the second year that Narconon Georgia has participated in the county fair, and thousands have stopped by the drug education booth and expressed their support and approval.

"We personally talked to so many people during the week of the fair we literally couldn't keep count. People kept asking for materials. We gave so many out that we ran low and had to quickly order more from the printer. Everyone wanted information about drugs," one volunteer stated. "Narconon really is spreading the word about addiction and recovery through its many educational programs. It was great to see our graduates out in the public eye and not ashamed to say 'Hey! I am a Narconon graduate, let me help you!'"

The county fair has served as a perfect venue for drug education as in a relaxed, cheerful atmosphere, a very serious subject can be addressed in a positive way. The kids and family learned something valuable without feeling they were being lectured to.

With all the rain and flooding, it's hard to believe any of this.  I've been past the fair several times this past week, and it's been dead, dead, dead.

A couple of us went to the fair the other day.  There was NO ONE in the narconon booth!  Their literature (I use the term loosely) was there, and their display boards were there, but there was no one manning the booth.  This delighted me tremendously, because it meant no interference as we walked around and informed the other people in the other booths, and more importantly, it meant no one there to sell people on narconon.

It was funny to just mention to people that narconon is associated with scientology, and watch their mouths drop open, and hear their exclamations.  One of the people said they had been there the previous days, and wanted us to stick around in the hopes that they would return.  We weren't really looking to have a confrontation at the fair, but we did keep checking back to see if they returned while we were there.  They did not.  We did, however, notice other booth vendors stopping and talking to this person, so I guess I can imagine what they were talking about.

The handouts were a Way to Happiness booklet with 3 anti-drug pamphlets in it, and something interesting about the Way to Happiness booklet - there was a sticker on the front that said Narconon of Georgia, along with the website link and the 1-877 number, but it covered up another sticker that had a local number on it.  Why?  I don't know...

I took some pictures (easy with no one at the booth), and I'll post them along with some scans of the pamphlets later on.  For now, the video narconon posted may be entertaining.

The booth was completely empty except for Narconon propaganda.

I won't give everything away about the propaganda since EC will be scanning those and posting pics. However, no mention of $cientology was found on any of the literature. Instead, Narconon of GA, TWTH foundation international, ABLE and Elron were acknowledged.

Yes. $cientology's front groups have front groups..........

Among other such nonsense about sauna, oils, and drugs stored in fat for 20 years, the alleged and ridiculous success rate of 70% was once again propagated in the materials.

The success rate was obviously fake to some of the locals we spoke to. Many people have experience with alcoholism or addiction and weren't born yesterday.

I find that very hard to believe with all of the rain that week and the entire box of books sitting at the empty booth the day before the fair closed.

Well, Scientologists know what happened, even though they fled the event because of the rain.  People were drawn to the booth because of its creative and happy looking banner.

They couldn't resist taking a book and some extras for families, volunteering to all call in and give their personal contact info to CoS!

And when the VMs or whoever returned, they dumped the books in a trash can so they could report that they were all given away.

People were drawn to the booth because their kids were screaming that they wanted a toy!  They were giving toys to the kids that signed the "drug-free pledge."  These kids weren't old enough to know what they were signing, they just wanted a toy.

That reminds me; I need to post my pictures.  I think there's another thread about this around here somewhere...  they should probably be merged...

Well, the happy banner thing WAS sarcasm :P  Knowing Scientology, they probably either tried to scare the people into it or just looked really bland!

Closer - don't see anyone...  There's no one working the booth!  Wow, how impressive it looks.

Good chance to get a shot of the display boards, which look like they've seen better days:

And put an appropriate sticker on the table, and there are the famous booklets and flyers, the ones they gave out so many of that they had to go to the printer to get more:

Narconon was truly in their element, along with all the other scams at the fair.  This one was some other kind of phony detox:

You put your feet into the clear water, and supposedly, the toxins were expelled - yick!  Look at that water!  I hope no one who put their feet in that had any open cuts.   :o

I thought about telling them I didn't have any toxins, because I had just been through scientology's purification rundown, to see what they'd say about one of their competitor's  scams, but didn't because I really just wanted to get out of there and go see some honest farm animals instead.   :)  I enjoyed the animals, but I don't think Free liked them very much.   :D

Thats some quality displays they have setup there.  It is just further proof that scientology has to hide behind their failing front groups to try to dupe new people into handing over their life savings.

I agree; the lamination makes it look really amateur.  Hey, narconon, there are professional methods for mounting stuff on a display board, so it doesn't look like it was scotch-taped on!  And that hand-written cardboard sign just puts the icing on the cake.

Still wish we'd had time to crank out some 'facts about Narconon' flyers and distribute them there.  Since they didn't even show up to man the booth, it would have been extra hilarial if we'd dropped some next to the 'Please Take One' cardboard sign!

Maybe next time.  :)

Ah, here it is: http://www.chem1.com/CQ/FootBathBunk.html

Quote
You place your feet in a bowl of water to which a bit of salt has been added. A small electric current is passed between two electrodes immersed in the water, which soon becomes quite discolored. The color, of course, comes from electrolytic corrosion of the metal electrodes. These are usually made of iron, nickel, and copper, all of which decompose into colored ions. These colors will vary with the amount of salt present and the pH of the solution, and they can be changed and greatly intensified by the substances that either added to the bath before use, or are present in the "soaps" often used to prepare the patient's feet. By-products of the electrolysis process are bubbles of hydrogen and chlorine gases (both of which are dangerous in confined spaces) and sodium hydroxide, commonly known as "lye". The latter tends to soften skin, allowing it to flake off, pick up various colors on reacting with the metal ions, and complete the illusion that one usually pays dearly for: individual treatments can be from $50 up, and the grossly overpriced power supply "machines" sold for home use can go for more than $1000. (You could of course build your own power source from parts obtainable from Radio Shack for around $35; see here for instructions.)

And of course, all that really gets cleaned out is your wallet!

When combined with electricity and metal electrodes, yes.
