Has Obama's drug czar Michael Botticelli been schooled?
« on: December 16, 2015, 06:58 »
2015 has rolled in big changes for drug addiction treatment at the Whitehouse level.

In February, despite all the flack given to Obama nominees across the board, Michael Botticelli was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in record time as director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP)

Botticelli seems to be a pretty cool guy, and is often described as a gay recovering alcoholic from the Massachusetts Dept of Health who has personally been thru rehab treatment.

He was recently featured on CBS 60minutes and I was very impressed. And I learned that Obamacare included perks for getting more insurance coverage on rehab treatment for addiction:

Which leads me to wonder about all the many things Mr. Botticelli should be harpooned on related to Scientology/Narconon drug rehab scams and the certification/licensing loopholes they exploit. (brain assplodes on the possibilities for putting together a US Drug Czar info packet)

Has harpooning this guy, or any of his predecessors, occurred to anyone else before now? (surely I'm late to the party on this idea??)

I missed the 60 minutes interview, but read a few quotes. Thanks for posting.

Treatment centers are regulated at the state level. Still, I like the idea of a US Drug Czar packet to inform. If nothing else, it might promote an educational initiative to help better inform people about treatment options, how to go about selecting/vetting treatment providers, etc.

For instance, a lot of people can safely be treated on an outpatient basis. Residential treatment is not always required.

I do know that some information was sent to SAMHSA at one time with little to no response.
The ultimate authority must always rest with the individual's own reason and critical analysis.

What I find interesting in all this is the stance of the folks crying "less government in our lives". If it was not for government oversight, the corporate entities would cut the quality of services in order to maximize profits.

Though narCONon is at the forefront of many of our thoughts, the rehab industry is riff with unregulated or barely regulated entities that are far more concerned with the bottom financial line that the welfare of those they serve.

I am appalled at some of the stories I read on the net about some of these places. A simple google search opens up the door to literally thousands of rehab centers with histories of horrible performance and less than ethical behavior.

The addiction rehab industry is broken!

Out and out greed at the expense of those they claim to serve.
