Dr. Joel R. Benk, 60: Midtown dentist didn’t just care about teeth - AJC

Dr. Joel Benk was a dentist who was interested in more than his patients’ oral health. Family and friends say Benk was genuinely concerned about the well-being of all people, not just those who sat in his exam rooms on Peachtree Street.

“He was always helping people, giving of himself,” said Keith Gilleard, a family friend. “He wasn’t selfish. I think giving was one of the many ways he supported his community.”

Joel Ronny Benk of Atlanta died Wednesday from complications of a heart attack. He was 60.

Dr. Benk was one of the big donors to the Atlanta Idle Org. He was mentioned earlier in the year on Mike Rinder's blog: http://www.mikerindersblog.org/disastrous-eus-ot-committee-report/

An earlier AJC piece that mentions Dr. Benk.

Wasn't Benk on the board of directors for the now closed NarCONon of Georgia? Or was that Dr.Schmidt? Sorry to see that someone died, but far more sorry to see what harm these folks do under the guise of a so called religion. How intellectual people the likes of Benk fall for this scientology stuff is beyond odd.

Wow. Sorry to read that he passed away. He was young!!

He was one of the Atlanta Org's major public players... How much you want to bet he refused to get appropriate medical care because of his beliefs as a scientologist?

I am a volunteer advocate for victims of the Narconon scam. I am a former scientologist. I post anonymously. Mary McConnell is my long time nom de plume. Feel free to contact me for assistance in righting the wrongs.

He was young! I wondered if he might have delayed getting care. With a heart attack that's always a risky proposition.

I keep reading that as "Midtown dentist just didn’t care about teeth".

But that's perhaps unfair, because unlike some dentists, he hasn't been in the news for screwing-over his patients or trying to force Scientology on his staff.

 ;) I did a double-take too.

He was passionate as a drug prevention activist helping to curb soaring prescription drug abuse by making the Truth About Drugs available to colleagues, educators and law enforcement professionals. Seeing the program’s effectiveness, he disseminated it to those who deal with drug abuse and provide drug prevention professionally—local police departments, school systems and drug courts.

Dr. Benk is one of the largest donors to the Atlanta Ideal Org project and his wife is or was holding the post of Executive Director at the church of Scientology here.  They have had at least one child in the Sea Org (a daughter).

When Dr. Benk was in Clearwater trying to get onto his OT levels, he somehow got a hold of my cell# and called me asking for a donation to a library campaign (one of hundreds of calls I got back then for the same thing).

In Scientology, even those who donate the most are also made to ask others for money - it is all about the money.

Benk donated over $500,000 (GOLD HUMANITARIAN) to the Atlanta Ideal Org, and had the following to say about his "success" in donating to the building:

Quote
The OT forces were out in full Saturday night at the most successful Ideal Org fund raiser so far. The impossible was confronted, everyone, I mean everyone cancelled their considerations and just flowed. There wasn't a single being in the audience that did not participate! They all came up to the white board, wrote down their donations and together hit the most spectacular, unbelievable, highest ever target of 750,000 dollars. An OT BOOM that rocked the southeast region of this here US of A!. Now that is what we're talking about! We had parishioners donating more than half their annual income; we even had an Atlanta parishioner make a secret donation of 100,000 dollars. One of the oldest Scientologists in the Atlanta field threw up no less than 4 donations during the night. His first was 20,000 dollars, then another 20,000 and then another 25,000 and his final 10,000 dollars before leaving. Additionally, he shared his secret of how to have a lot of money and how he applies LRH datums to his personal finances so he can continue flowing and enjoy taking responsibility for his dynamics. After that one of his sister's donated 5,000 dollars, then his son and nephew would not be denied and not only donated but decided to double their night's donations before it was over. Never before was there such a group that together assumed the beingness of total disagreement with the MEST Universe. Everyone cancelled their considerations on what they could do or not do; all made the pro-survival decision to put the Atlanta Ideal Org of the Southeast there! PC's started to honor their auditors by coming up to the white board, and tell everyone about some of their wins and then made huge donations. One PC shared his recent auditing win which enabled him to make a decision after auditing which resulted in tripling his personal income; so he decided to donate 89,000 and acknowledge the tech of Scientology and his auditor, who was present, and was honored by this. He quickly moved himself and family to the proud level to Humanitarian. He would not stop there and made three more trips to the white board until he emptied his wallet. Inspired, many more assumed the same viewpoint and started to empty there coffers and continued to donate. Then one of Atlanta Org's beloved PC's, George Clark, continued to increase his donation level and handed 100,000 dollar check to Margy from the Landlord's Office which brought him and his family to the level of Triple Humanitarian. Just a few days later, on Wednesday, George donated an additional 100,000 dollars, which brings him up to a total of 400,500 dollars so far. We were also honored with the presence of a non Scientologist who nevertheless realized that we have the solutions to handle society's problems. She got so inspired and made the decision to donate 50,000 dollars of her hard earned money to help insure the future of her City, State and region by putting the Ideal Org of the Southeast there. Personally, I got so inspired that I couldn't even hold myself back and donated another 50,000 dollars. This has brought my family's donation level to Triple Humanitarian exceeding 300,000 dollars. All in all it was one of the most phenomenal OT evenings ever in Atlanta. I speak for everyone in attendance was completely keyed out and I remain so. Much Love Joel Benk

and this:

Quote
From the beginning Scientology has done nothing but give me the only workable solutions to the problems I have had to face in life! Many of these problems, if not properly handled, would have led my family, friends and I into a bottomless pit where the only sensation would have been at best, numbness. Fortunately LRH worked it out so my family, friends and I could enjoy life. He has empowered us with the tech to not only flourish and prosper but to truly salvage this society and its planet. So when I realized that the Ideal Org evolution would mean that clearing the Planet was for real and it started in my own backyard, I decided to handle myself put my neck on the line to help make it go right and donate. I canceled my considerations, went outside of my comfort level and became a Silver Humanitarian. I feel privileged to be part of the Ideal Org fundraising. And I know that it is my responsibility and that I have not committed a fourth dynamic overt of omission by not doing more than I thought I was capable of donating. Thank you for the opportunity. All our love, Joel, Debbie and Ryan Benk. Silver Humanitarians

Let's hope there is some left for his wife to survive and retire on.
