Heads Up, a little bit of downtime coming
« on: January 28, 2015, 09:29 »
Tipping Point will have some downtime for maintenance sometime in the next few days.  Just lettin' y'all know so you won't be alarmed.

I think you'll all be pleased when it comes back up.

Except for Narconon, they won't be pleased.   ;)

We're back!  I hope everyone likes our new look!

We also have a couple of new features to play with.

"Save as draft" for new posts and replies: which can be retrieved from your profile's show posts section.  Others should not be able to see your drafts until they are posted. I believe this link will get you there:
http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;sa=drafts

"Topic Preview" which will show a tooltip with the first characters of the opening post from the message index.

Search should also be working properly again for everyone.

If anyone runs into any problems, or sees anything related to the appearance that looks amiss, let me know.  (I'm not speaking about design decisions, but places where the design may have been missed, don't quite look right, etc.)

Guess I'll get used to the new layout in time, but would it be possible to use a color scheme that's isn't quite so intense, and with a bit less yellow?

I'm not as young as I used to be, and find the intensity of the new scheme very wearing on the eyes. I'm also one of the 8% of people with color vision problems, and mine primarily relates to how I perceive yellows. In fact, to me the page looks to be a weird combination of pinks that's very hard to read. My daughter verified for me that what I'm actually seeing are shades of yellow.

Thanks.

I don't even see any yellow. The white is intense to me but I will get used to it.

The main purpose of the maintenance was not for me to create a new theme, but to update to the latest version of the SMF (Simple Machines Forum) software.  The older green theme would not work with the newer version of the software, without a bunch of adaptation.

So, since this forum is so closely tied with Narconon Reviews, I tried to make a new forum theme that would resemble the appearance of Narconon Reviews, while still maintaining its own look.  I'm not going to change the yellow background because it's more effort than I have time for right now, and mainly, because it does match Narconon Reviews, and I like it.  I'm sorry you do not.

However, since you're a valuable member, BigBeard, as is everyone else who chooses to post here, I've set the forum configuration to allow individual members to choose their theme.  The choices are the one you're looking at, and the SMF default theme, which is based on subdued tones of gray and blue.  I hope it will work better for you than the "yellow theme".  I think we do important work here, and I don't want to inhibit it by imposing my design choices on people.

Mary, I don't know what you're seeing, but you are welcome to change yours to the SMF default as well, as is any registered member.

You should be able to go to your profile now, and under "Modify Profile", choose "Look and Layout", look for this line:
Current Theme:  TP-2  (change)
and click "change" to select the other one.
You will still have a new layout to get used to, though.

This may get you there:

So, anyone got anything good to say??  Does anyone like the save as draft feature, or the tooltip previews??

Switched to the SMF theme and my old eyes are a lot happier now.

Thank you.

Thank you.

You're welcome.  Glad to make you happier.  I guess it's kind of a good thing not all of us see things the same way.   :)

I'm staying with the default :)

The default SMF, or the default Tipping Point?  The blue, or the new "folder" theme?

Thank you!  I'm just glad we can search properly again.

I've been needing to do this update for the longest time, but I was assured by someone who works deep inside the SMF code that there were no security vulnerabilities in that previous version, so I felt safe staying with it.  The server update a little while back was what caused the search to quit working, and was also responsible for keeping the popup name suggestions when you PM someone from working (which you had mentioned to me, Mary), so the version was starting to show its age.  It was time.

 (((O)))!

The 'folder theme' default which I assume everyone is automatically set up for since you redid it :)

Glad about the sdearch capability, too, Sure missed that.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but the time zone had changed during the update, so I've fixed it now.  If the time doesn't show correctly for you (logged in members using the folder theme will see the current time on the upper right, below your member info), you can go to your profile under Look and Layout, and enter a Time Offset.

The server is set to US Eastern Time, so it would be the offset from that, not from UTC.  Eastern members should have 0; west coast members should have -3 (I believe); Irish and British should have +5 (I believe). If you have trouble knowing what to set, the time is also displayed on that page so you can adjust it till it looks correct for you.  This also affects the time shown on posts and PMs.

You can also set how the date and time will appear to you, i.e. 24 hour or 12 with am/pm, etc. on that profile page.

People not logged in will see time in US Eastern.
