Your daily jolt: Cherokee school board arrest could prove awkward for governor - AJC (blog)
Political Insider with Jim Galloway

The strange case of the Cherokee County school board member and her political strategist has yet to be sorted out – but it could carry some inconvenient implications for Gov. Nathan Deal.

Late Friday, felony arrest warrants were issued for board member Kelly Marlow, elected just last year, and Robert Trim, a political adviser who only recently was acting as a spokesman for then-state senator Chip Rogers of Woodstock.

The two were accused of falsely alleging that Frank Petruzielo, the county school superintendent, had tried to hit them with his car after a heated school board meeting in June. Marlow and Trim turned themselves in Saturday morning.

Barbara Knowles, the Cherokee County Republican Party secretary, turned herself in Sunday. She is charged with a misdemeanor arising from the same incident.

Normally, these kinds of incidents dissolve into a swamp of he-said, she-said. Not so this time. The arrests came with this statement from a spokesman for the Canton police:

“After a thorough investigation, Canton detectives were able to determine that Knowles had made a false police report and Knowles, Marlow, and Trim had all provided false statements to detectives.”

In an interview with the Cherokee Tribune, Police Chief Robert Merchant was more blunt:  “They lied. The bottom line is based on the evidence we have, this was just totally fabricated.”...

....Even more inconvenient for the governor: Marlow has been the leading voice on the school board raising suspicions of Common Core standards being pushed throughout the state.
