Title: Serenity Point Rehab Marne, MI Staff Exodus?

Per Wickstrom's recently licensed Marne, Michigan facility (Serenity Point Rehab) just posted multiple "immediate openings" on Indeed.com--including a Director of Nursing.

Was this a mass staff exodus, housecleaning, growing pains---or something else?

I don't have the answers, but thanks for posting about this, Miss Fortune.   :)

I'm just reviewing Per's LARA records prior to automating the check for changes.

It looks like Serenity Point picked up a couple of complaints: 9-24-15, 11-20-15
https://w2.lara.state.mi.us/VAL/License/Details/2293913

I'd love to be watching the location well before the "unannounced inspections" to see how much of a fire drill happens, and when.

The surveyors are rubber-stamping approval on their follow-up visits, similar to what we saw in Georgia with Narconon and DCH. Narconon of Georgia was almost shut down in 2006 and someone with authority intervened on their behalf. It's really a shame a young man had to die to get their attention, and still not one person prosecuted.

The state surveyors fail to understand that just because Serenity Point says it has a policy, doesn't mean they follow it, or any rule for that matter.

Serenity Point gets the first direct-from-LARA license box:

Category:Serenity Point (http://umbraxenu.no-ip.biz/mediawiki/index.php/Category:Serenity_Point)

That was done by copy-paste to get the license box worked-out on the wiki side, but that's the data extracted direct from the LARA page. I just have to add a little glue and whenever a LARA page data changes, the wiki table will be updated too. (And now a change to the LARA disclaimer won't trigger a false update.)

To do:
Then it's on to do the same for the California CHHS records, and California business records, and IRS Form 990s...

Hmm. Right after I posted that, I've been getting a stream of hits on that page from 74.87.163.xxx addresses. (LA) A different IP each time.

The death of this couple's 23-year-old daughter inspired them to host an awareness walk. She was a January graduate of Serenity Point Recovery.

TAMAQUA — Alexandria “Alex” Sienkiewicz was 23 years old when she died April 2 of a fentanyl overdose.

Her parents, John and Tammy Sienkiewicz, want to help others in the midst of their grief. They formed Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feets. The group is hosting an Overdose Awareness Candle Light Walk at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the borough’s Bungalow Park, Catawissa Street.

“We started this walk because of Alex,” Tammy said.

On Sunday, Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III said “a hot shot, or hot batch, is a term for giving a very potent drug combination that the dealer knows would overdose their system and likely kill them.”

If she managed to stay clean for a while after Serenity Point, I think that was her own success rather than the program's.

I'm certain she never wanted to go back.

Rubber Stamp Hoyt is entirely too trusting.

A new complaint in LARA for Serenity Point, from February:

https://w2.lara.state.mi.us/VAL/Files/ViewDocument/34151

tl;dr: other client supplied drugs, Serenity Point says no, James Hoyt says fine, case closed.

I'll read it again after I have coffee. Sending someone for psychiatric help seems weird for Narconon.

I wish Mr. Hoyt would interview some of the clients at Serenity Point when he goes out on a complaint investigation. He seems to be relying solely on the Executive Director's word for everything.

They always seem to have their paperwork perfectly in order, ready for the "unannounced inspection of the facility".

It may be marked "Closed" because Serenity's license expired on July 31, 2018. Serenity's Facebook page is still active and its site ( http://www.serenityrehab.org/) is still live online.

Unless Michigan operates differently than most places I've lived, I don't get 'state certified' and 'CARF accredited' being part of the listing. Normall if a new owner takes over a treatment facility, and brings in new staff, they have to get there own certifications, license to operate, and any accreditations required.

Good point.

It would make sense that a closed facility with a lapsed state license wouldn't have "certification" available on a "turn key" basis.

Also, CARF states the obvious on its own site:
"A service provider seeking accreditation for the first time generally needs nine to twelve months to prepare for a survey."

Unless the "certification" and "accreditation" are just certificates on the wall that didn't actually come from the state or CARF.

LARA lists licenses. I don't know what "state certification" would be unless it's a catch-all of zoning, fire safety approval, etc. CARF's certification is mainly safety of the location, so a new tenant could probably get an expedited inspection where they check off that nothing has changed.

Per's Narconon Freedom Center also lost its license (https://w2.lara.state.mi.us/VAL/License/Details/2179425). Is he selling that place too? I wonder if he's planning new places, or now that he's got his fancy house near Clearwater, he's cashing out of the game before he gets busted for something?

Wickstrom's TIA Corporation still owns the building that housed the Narconon Freedom Center, which is now occupied by another related entity, "Awakenings Rehabilitation".

Awakenings was formed on December 29, 2016 as a Nevada corporation (Awakenings Rehabilitation, Inc.), and applied for certification in Michigan on February 24, 2017. The Michigan paperwork was executed by attorney Phil Slot.

Awakenings was issued a Michigan substance abuse facility license on August 2, 2017:
https://w2.lara.state.mi.us/VAL/License/Details/2420944 (https://w2.lara.state.mi.us/VAL/License/Details/2420944)

Its Senior Director of Administration is Josh Sowers, who most recently worked as the Program Director at the Narconon Freedom Center:
vhttps://w2.lara.state.mi.us/VAL/Files/ViewDocument/38152 (http://vhttps://w2.lara.state.mi.us/VAL/Files/ViewDocument/38152)

Brad Lyben, a longtime Wickstrom alum, is the Executive Director. Lyben was formerly with the now-shuttered Serenity Point Recovery, and previously was the Senior Director of Production at Best Drug Rehabilitation.

It's all the Per standard crew.

Category:Narconon Freedom Center (https://umbraxenu.no-ip.biz/mediawiki/index.php/Category:Narconon_Freedom_Center)

It pisses me off that Michigan allowed them to run duplicate licenses for the same location, even if they did play that game with the address.

Different street address, maybe even different entrance, but the same parking lot and same facility, and one of the licenses was sucking down complaints and revisits during that time. ARGHHHH!

And... they were in survey trouble after their post-licensure survey for non-compliance with staffing requirements.

Quote
R325.14901(2) Staffing
The equivalent of 1 full-time counselor shall be available for every 10 residents.
It was noted during the site visit on 11/06/2017, the program only had two full-time counselors for twenty-eight residents. On 11/08/2017, the program submitted a plan to address the non-compliance by indicating that the program has hired an additional LLPC. Actual compliance will be verified at the time of the next licensure survey.

I hope it doesn't take two years for Michigan to to follow-up and verify their compliance.
