There is more information about the deaths above in the posts that follow.  We do not know if these are all of the Narconon deaths; these are just all we know about.  If you know of one that is not included here, please let me know so I can update the list.  I hope there won't be another occasion to need to do that, but I fear there will, until Narconon and all of its clones are shut down.

Overdose and Other Related Deaths After Attending Narconon
Note: I've decided to add the drug overdose deaths of people who went to Narconon because while they didn't die as a direct result of being in Narconon's care, Narconon does claim that they are a "cure" for addiction.  They are not.  The following list is evidence of that.

November 18, 1990, Frederica Gardini (http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,402.msg33272.html#msg33272), (daughter of Maria Pia Gardini (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Pia_Gardini)), 29 (and OT7), AIDS, contracted after using an infected needle given to her by someone while she was at Narconon.

April 2, 1998, Rob Pilatus (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,282696,00.html), 32, overdose combination of alcohol and prescription pills, soon after having left Narconon.

Died May 28, 2000 (?) and found on July 6, 2000, Cory Marvin Erving (http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,402.msg33208.html#msg33208), 19, drowned when his car went off the road and landed in a retention pond.  Trace amounts of cocaine were found in his system, but it was determined not to be in sufficient quantities for it to have caused the accident.  Sheriff Don Eslinger said the amounts indicated that he had ingested the drug within two or three days of the accident.  The accident was approximately a week after he left Narconon.
Narconon Arrowhead, Canadian, Oklahoma

Nov. 11, 2008, David Reed Austin (http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,402.msg27877.html#msg27877), 37, committed suicide about a year after leaving Narconon, where he was employed as a "Word Clearer".

Narconon Arrowhead, Canadian, Oklahoma

Ray R. (http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,12060.msg27853.html#msg27853), brain damage, one of Per Wickstrom's places, either Best Drug Rehabilitation or A Forever Recovery

Other People's Deaths as a result of someone close to them having been to Narconon

He cried as he read his apology statement to Heather’s mother, Linda Francomb, and Heather’s brother, Xan.
Narconon Arrowhead, Canadian, Oklahoma

January 14th, 2012, Robert Gallion (http://narcononreviews.net/lawsuits/anise-evans-v-narconon-northern-california-dr-stephen-stein-mike-dipalma-harris-evans-and-does-1-100/), age unknown, stabbed to death by his son Harris who had been taken off psychiatric medication while at Narconon and then was dumped on the street by Narconon when he got out of control.
Narconon Vista Bay, Watsonville, California

I have caught up to adding everything posted in this thread up until this post on December 13 (http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,402.msg33213.html#msg33213), at least the ones for which we have details.

The original start to this thread, before the lists were added.
Narconon has been widely criticized for its dangerous detox ritual.  Other recurring problems are use of drugs and alcohol by staff and students, lack of proper medical care, and withheld prescribed medication.  Some have given up their lives instead of the drugs.

Pius Keel, a confirmed Scientologist of 22, ended his stay at the Schliersee tragically. He got himself into deep debt for his community. After some time at Narconon he complained to his mother about the barefaced swindle. Narconon is only about money, he said. On September 14, 1990, after less than two months at Narconon, Pius packed his bags and threw himself under a train.

TACENO (Lecco)  - "Why don't you say instead that we saved 1.200 people from drugs?" Angela, an assistant of the Narconon community in Taceno, Valsassina, protests.

Last night another guest of the center, the second,  died at the hospital in Lecco. Paride Ella, 22 from Grassobbio (Bergamo), ceased to live after a 5 days agony. He had similar symptoms - vomit and diarrhoea - as the ones felt by Giuseppe Tomba, 26 from Solaro (Milano). But for him there even wasn't enough time to call a doctor.

The <<dianetic>> community - rehabilitation from drugs through purification courses, vitamins and minerals <<to get rid from negative entities>> - is not provided with medical service, and the doctor of the village just established that Giuseppe's heart wasn't beating anymore. The two young men were at the beginning of the therapeutic path, the vitamins phase.

This excerpt is from the French Parliamentary Report on Cults of 1995.
-----------------------------------
The County Court of Dijon, in a judgement of January 9, 1987 (No 118-87), condemned the assistant-director of the Narconon center of Grangey-sur-Ource for lack of assistance to a person in danger. This center, created by the Church of Scientology, proposes cures of detoxication by applying the methods of Ron Hubbard, namely the "purification rundown", based mainly on several hours of sauna per day, "auditing" and a significant absorption of vitamins.

In this case, the victim was a long time epileptic and had been addressed to this
organization because she wished "to be released from the drugs". The center, without preliminary medical examination, placed her in a room of "weaning". However, the medical expertises showed that the death was due to "a state of epileptic seizures due to the absence of sufficient handling in its beginning and emergency treatment during the seizures."

The judgement does not leave any doubt about the responsibility of the center...

Edit: added a list at the top.

'STUDENT' COMMITS SUICIDE DURING CRIMINON DRUG REHAB DETOX

CODY BATES hanged himself at the San Francisco SBDC New Life Center Criminon facility on August 27, 2008. He'd been admitted to the facility on August 24th and began detox the next day. During the first day of detox, he had been administered medication with known side effects that included suicidal ideation to help facilitate the detox. Cody's mother thought he was under medical care and asked SBDC New LIfe Staff to provide 24 hr suicide watch of Cody because of statements he made to staff indicating he might commit suicide. The staff promised to keep a watchful eye but did not follow through and Cody was found on the 27th to have committed suicide. Apparently there was no medical personnel at the facility either.

Hello. My name is Cody Bates. I was apart of the original indictment that first landed Jon in jail. His co-defendant to be exact. Now that my legal troubles are behind me, I feel that I can have more of an out right voice as one of Jon's home base supporters. There are few people in the world today who mean more to me than our friend Jon does. He, long ago, surpassed the title of friend to me and became my brother. I'm sure most of you know of the torturous underworld that Jon became apart of once he was arrested; however Jon was not alone. In the beginning I was physically there with him. Jon makes no exaggeration of the conditions of the Arizona legal system. NONE. Joe Arpaio is riding the crest of a dehumanizing wave of facism. We are all lesser people for allowing Arpaio to stay in power.

My thoughts turn to Jon on this Fourth of July Day because it was on this day in 1994 that I lost my oldest brother, Rick. I was 17 at the time and if he were alive today he would be 42. Not long after his death I wrote a little something that I call "Brotherhood." I've shared it with Jon and I will end by sharing it here today.

    Brotherhood
Written on 11.9.94 in memory of Rick Bates 7.4.94

In the name of truth I ask no more.
In the vain of youth there is a common core.
That has no name and bares no soul,
yet a heart pumping blood black as coal.
As cold as ice the fire burns on.
No trust in God, my faith is gone.
So much evil enslaves the good.
Alone I fall, alone I stood.
    I have no fear
nor feel the love I should,
and believe in only one thing
    Brotherhood.

Jon, of Jon's Jail Journal, has quite a story of his own: http://jonsjailjournal.blogspot.com/2009/12/welcome-guardian-readers-i-started-jons.html

I wonder if or what he knows about Criminon?

Reading this topic I remembered a fairly recent case of someone dying at Narconon in Zutphen, Holland too. I copied an English translantion of the Dutch article from ESMB.(Thanks, AnonKat). Another one for the list that is already far to long.

Dead of a woman hits hard at Narconon

by Jenny Polman. Monday, October 15, 2007 | 5:23 | Last updated: Monday, March 1, 2010 | 1:56 p.m.

ZUTPHEN - Director Joanna Kluessien of private rehab Narconon Zutphen does not exclude anything when it comes to the unexpected death of the 30-year-old Laura, Friday.

Even that the woman, despite all the restrictions, has managed drug smuggling into center at the Deventerweg. "That is the horribility of it this," said a clearly disthraught Kluessien that has broken of a study tour to Denmark to be accessible for residents and relatives.

Laura - the fictitious name out of respect for the survivors - already spent eight months at Narconon rehab program and could well cope. "She ate well and even came gained weight, she slept well, was energetic and very helpful," said Daan Reinstra, public relations officer of Narconon, about the woman who was found dead friday morning in her bed. The cause of death is still unknown, but Kleussien and Reinstra do not exclude a drug-related cause. "Residents can be under guide going to the city but you can not people here 24 hours a day. The doors are always open and the stuff is everywhere available."

Narconon will seize the tragic incident for an even more intensive campaign against drugs. "We want to spread more information about what drugs can do. Because it is easier to deter youth from the start than getting them to stop using it. You can not warn children young enough. Its use seems increasingly to be accepted in our society, it looks stranger not to take pills than not. We're going to fight harder to eradicate drug use. Something like this should never happen again, we will do anything to make that happen. "

For the other (25) residents of Narconon is the death of Laura, a harsh lesson, says Kluessien. "They're shaken, talk about it a lot. They are back to face the facts. We also state." Laura initially used heroin, speed, and later subotex (pills), until she ended up at Narconon. Whether she was completely clean Kluessien dare not say.

Kluessien is very pleased with the way the Zutphen police dealing with the death of Laura. "Very thorough and compassionate. They want to get to the bottom too about what led to her dead. That is what we want. And if becomes clear she used something weonly hope that the person who the stuff was from is picked up." That has to be a Zutphen dealer acording to Kluessien . The residents spend a few days in their own way of attention to the death of Laura, who will be buried in Greece - her country of origin - . "We're going to make a flower arrangement and will have a rememberance with a selected group people.

Apparently this lady had spent 8 months at Narconon, and the director wasn't sure if she was really clean. After 8 months in rehab one should be clean, right? Specially if the program normally only takes three months. This makes me presume she was a student-turned-staffmember living there. A foreign national, probably with drugs- or other crimes on her record would never get a working permit, specially in a rehab-facility. No working permit, no legal stay in the country after three months. Only prolonged treatment would be a reason to legally extend her stay in Holland. So they passed her of as a student to the police.

Nobody stays that long, except staff-members. But having illegal staff-members dying on drug overdoses in your center will immediately end your valuable contract with the Justice Department to resocialize convicts. Trouble-trouble, puzzle-puzzle. What would Hubbard do?
Find an acceptable truth, like "she was still a student here". Well done, Joanna! {=lies=}

This is not the first time somebody died there. Somewhere in the nineties there was another case, a Dutch girl. But I don't remember the details on that one. Still, I hope this info is useful.

2 more unfortunate deaths to add to this thread:

Patrick W. Desmond at Narconon of Georgia:
http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,8408.0.html
Patrick was required by the court to attend a drug rehab in lieu of being sentenced to jail.  His parents researched their options on the internet, where Narconon dominates search engine results, and sent him to Narconon of Georgia, after Narconon of Georgia assured both the drug court in Florida and his parents that they met the court's requirements of residential treatment and monitoring of clients.  Patrick was allowed to leave the rehab residence on one night in June 2008 and go with 2 former clients to procure and use heroin.  Patrick was rushed to the hospital that night after he stopped breathing and turned blue, but efforts to reverse his condition were fruitless and he died the following day.  Narconon of Georgia was running the residence for their clients without a license.  Patrick Desmond was 28 years old.

A wrongful death case is currently still in progress.  Read the complaint (http://alley.ethercat.com/storage/10A28641/10A28641-2-2010-05-19-ComplaintForWrongfulDeathPainSufferingAndOtherDamages.pdf) and any of the other Desmond v. Narconon court documents (http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,8408.msg19376.html#msg19376) listed in the thread for additional information.

http://narconon.blogspot.com/2011/11/narconon-oklahoma-is-deadly-place.html

On October 25, 2011, Gabriel Graves complained of a very terrible headache, a worsening continuation of the one from the day before. It started after he began going into the sauna part of the Narconon drug program he'd gone to in order to get help with his addiction. He had been sweating for hours a day after taking the daily increasing amounts of of vitamins - the combination of which, according to the materials he was made to study, were to remove drugs and toxins from his body. He complained about his headaces and his pain, and asked for pain relief but was denied any each time. Instead, he was told to get back into the sauna.  The following morning, Gabriel was found dead in his bed.  The condition of his body indicated that Gabriel might have suffered an aneurysm or a stroke.  Gabriel Graves was 32 years old.

These deaths were preventable. people go to rehab to be helped. It's supposed to be a safe and secure place. No one sends their loved one to a rehab to die but with Narconon people just don't alwayts know what they are getting into. I protest and help expose Narconon to help prevent these deaths and medical problems that have happened on the program.

You are so right, Mary, because Narconon presents itself as whatever it is that people are looking for, whether they meet that qualification or not.

I am always grateful for my family, and maybe a little bit more aware of that fact this time of year as we get together. I guess I'm having a but for the Grace of God moment.

One has to wonder what the outcome would have been for these young people had they found a reputable treatment center.

Thank you Sunshine.  I had not seen this.  My condolences to Ms. Evans and the Gallion children.

There is a post I made somewhere here that is a sad foreshadowing of this type of incident...  Let me find it...  Here it is: http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,3257.msg8554.html#msg8554

I hate to sound like a broken record (lol, remember them?) but - HOW MANY will have to die before something is done about these Narconon Fresh Start / New Life Detox, Drug, and Alcohol Rehab / Treatment /  Education Programs, with their claims of "holistic", non-12-step, and secular methods that treat the whole person and teach them to live a drug-free life, and blah-de-blah-de-blah?   Edit: Oh, yes, and let's not forget the AMAZING success rate...  <grrrr>

Thanks so much for finding and posting this!

This is a terrible example of the greed and the scam of taking money and then dumping patients who 'don't meet their qualifications'.

Narconon and Stein have a fraud thing going on with his name. Dr "Steven M Stein" is actually Dr. Stephen M Stein, medical director not only for Narconon Northern California
http://www.vistabay.com/dr_stein.php

Here's one of the NN Vista Bay videos showing they use the name "Steven Stein"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dyPrK8SaHM

but for years, at least until mid 2010, he was, and could still be, the medical director for Camp Recovery in Scotts VAlley in Santa Cruz County.

Its my belief that Stein has been involved with Camp Recovery, which is now a member of the  nationally recognized CRC HEALTH GROUP INC

Stephen M Stein MD (C R C Help Inc) - Scotts Valley, California  - no such corp exists today

This case is another reason why Narconon should be shut down. Narconon is anti-mental health care and this is the product. What a damn shame.

It reminds me of the death of MARY HEATHER SPENCER. Her boyfriend George Bell III left Narconon Oklahoma after 3 months, having been sent there because while on PCP he beat up his girlfriend.

So after the 3 months, he returns ( supposed to be 6 months) and he kills the girlfriend in a drug rage 3 days after leaving NN. His mother who paid for him to go to Narconon refused to testify, despite the strong evidence that she was in the home when thisn happened and did not alert police right away.

Just Because A Guy Is Rich Doesnt Mean He Has Class
http://womenincrimeink.blogspot.com/2009/03/just-because-guy-is-rich-doesnt-mean-he.html

http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20100312/NEWS/303120002/Killer+s+mom+may+talk

The mother of convicted killer George Bell III could give a statement under oath soon for the first time about what she witnessed the night her son beat Heather Spencer to death.

The statement would become part of a wrongful death suit filed in 2008 against the Bells as well as the drug treatment program George Bell III attended before the murder. The suit seeks the maximum amount of compensation and punitive damages allowed under Mississippi law.

George Bell III killed Spencer, his 28-year-old ex-girlfriend, in his mother's home between Sept. 10 and 11, 2007, just days after leaving the Narconon Arrowhead drug rehabilitation center in Canadian, Okla. He then kidnapped Spencer's roommate at gunpoint and took her to a house on Trawick Drive in northeast Jackson.

George Bell pleaded guilty in February 2008 and is serving a life sentence.
[..]

The suit contends Robbie Bell put her son, who "had been abusing cocaine, angel dust, PCP and steroids," in Narconon while wanted by Jackson police on a domestic violence warrant for attacking Spencer with a rubber mallet in June 2007. Spencer, who needed more than 50 stitches to close her wounds, later dropped the charge. [..]

The family also blames Narconon and its parent corporation, Narconon International, of failing to adequately treat George Bell III and to warn Spencer that Bell left the program months shy of completing it.

Narconon International was founded in 1966 by William Benitez, a former Arizona state inmate, and has grown into a network of 120 centers worldwide.

"Our drug rehabilitation program does not use drugs or medications to solve the problems caused by drugs, but does use nutrition and nutritional supplements as an important component of its delivery. Thus the Narconon program is neither a psychiatric nor medical, but a social education model of rehabilitation," the program's Web site states.

Francomb said she questions Narconon's methods because they follow the principles of the Church of Scientology, a religion founded in the 1950s based on the teachings of science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard.

"The reason we filed suit to begin with is the fact that after George's care there, he murdered my daughter," she said. "I just feel like they didn't do the correct job of helping him with his problem. If they are going to continue to be in the business, they either don't need to be dealing with violent offenders or they need to make sure they treat those people for their violent tendencies."

What is  Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia   http://www.nadf.us/diseases/cah.htm
It can be deadly for someone with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia to be taken off their medication, especially if their antibiotics for pneumonia are also taken away.

Here are a few symptoms that would indicate that an adrenal crisis is iminent:

*Headache *Profound Weakness *Fatigue *Slow Lethargic Movement *Nausea *Vomiting *Low Blood Pressure *Dehydration *High Fever *Shivering and Chills *Confusion or Coma *Darkening of the skin (see skin, abnormally dark or light) *Rapid Heart Rate *Joint Pain *Abdominal Pain *Unintentional Weight Loss *Tachypnea: Rapid Respiratory Rate *Unusual and Excessive Sweating on Face and/or Palms *Skin Rash or Lesion may be present *Flank Pain *Appetite Loss

When someone with CAH has an adrenal crisis, an intravenous or intramuscular injection of hydrocortisone (an injectable corticosteroid) must be given immediately. The patient will also need the following:

1: Supportive treatment of low blood pressure

2: Hospitalization is required for adequate treatment and monitoring.

3: Low blood pressure may be treated with intravenous fluids.

4: If infection is the cause of the crisis, antibiotic therapy is indicated.

Death may occur due to overwhelming shock if early treatment is not provided. Go to the ER or A & E or call the local emergency services if symptoms of acute adrenal crisis develop.

http://www.nadf.us/diseases/cah.htm

Below is some of the info reported to the coroner. Hillary did have  condition requiring corticosteroid medication, as the father mentioned on her facebook. CAH patients MUST take their medication but was Hillary prevented from taking hers, as has happened to  so many Narconon patients? Did the lack of taking it and the antibiotics she was supposed to be finishing up for the pneumonia that was improving get taken away? Here is what was reported before seeing that she had CAH

[..]Read the father's facebook wall: you need to be signed in I believe. There is much telling information on it. Scroll down to April 1st and then on up. He also comments in reply to replies, so look at those.

After reading what he wrote, it is my belief that Narconon withheld this girl's medication, a corticosteroid called Dexamethasone used for a chronic condition which the father mentions about in an earlier comment about her being ill with it and having pneumonia before her death.

If you read his comment announcing the death, he says she died of  pneumonia and adrenal failure - although her lab work was ok before she left.

The parents may not be aware that Narconon takes medicines away as soon as the student is registered ( the 'student' signs a statement agreeing to no use of 'drugs'including asperine or tylonol.  Most people do not know that this includes prescribed medicines. Sometimes it can take up to 3 days for the Narconon Case Supervisor to approve the use of prescribed medicines before they are given to the 'student'.

A person who must be on corticosteroids like Dexamethasone can go into adrenal failure if taken off their medicine abruptly. These meds are tapered in increments until down to a low amount because of this and other serious side effects.

A former NN student stated that she is friends with the person who worked with the 'girl' in the withdrawal room before she died and found her. This friend was Hillary's 'twin' .

I had the poster edit her post to prevent the friend from being identified and thus targeted by Narconon for talking about what happened. Here is the edited comment, minus that information:

I was there from November to February, and I never heard of anything about them having their residential licensing suspended... If they did they just pretended like it didn't happen and kept right on going.

I still have several friends that work at Narconon Arrowhead...  The body of the young woman who died Tuesday was found when staff was checking vitals in withdrawal.    She complained of a pain in her abdomen while running a light objective... The staff member was trained that the pain was triggered by the objective and it would go away after running through it non-stop until the staff member observed the student showing VGIs. During the excessive running of the objective however, she left the sessions and got in bed. It wasn't until they were checking student's vitals in the early morning that they realized she had passed away.

VGIs= Very good indicators like smiling or calm and ok with what is going on, without resistance. ( these are really training drills to train people to be robotically compliant!)

 April 1 at 12:33pm ·
I'm asking all my friends to pray for my daughter Hillary Holten. She became deathly ill ,day before yesterday. She has a condition to were. She take Dexamethasone on a daily basis.Thursday she came home from spending the night with a friend.I noticed that she wasn't feeling to good. She became worse and began throwing up and could not hold down water. This went on all night and into the next day.I finally decided to take her to the ER.She has an infection,Phneumonia, please pray for her, please.

Important note: The adrenal glands are near the top of the kidneys. I had a friend ( we were both scientologists) who had an adrenal problem and his stomach would hurt when he was having problems with it. Fortunately he finally got medical attention but he's still a scientologist). My point is that I believe that the pain she felt during this time in withdrawal was referred pain from her adrenal glands. If she was abruptly taken off her medication, as I suspect, she could have experienced adrenal failure like the father mentions happened to her as one reason for her death. The thing is, I don't think they know that Narconon takes medicine away from students and probably never administered both her antibiotics and Dexamethasone. This should be looked into by the parents. The coroner is investigating" [..]

This obituary confirms that the girl needed medications. Whether the lack of them played a part in her death, we don't know. Whether the stress in withdrawal while being made to continue on with objective processes despite complaints of abdominal pain is related to her death, we shall see.

I just pray for this family and hope you will too.

Yes, they can do all that and check the antibiotics she was supposed to be taking while there - they have probably already done that. Some tests take longer than others but they are probably testing everything, including vitamin levels, as they were pumping her up with the drug bomb, too, per the program .

I have heard from a creditable source that the OSBI has knowledge of 5 deaths this YEAR!!!!!

The Pittsburg Co. Sheriffs Department has been dispatched to NN AH for holding students against their will.

There is a Mother and Father there right now trying to get their daughter out, but NN AH is useing that old "theres a paperwork issue".  There are around 15 other students from out of state that are trying to leave, but NN AH is refusing to trasport them to the Tulsa Int. Airport.

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!

Other deaths at the facility include those of 28-year-old Kaysie Dianne Werninck, who died in March 2009; 52-year-old Jean Lafitte, who died in January 2009; 53-year-old Fred Oesterreicher, who died in April 2007; and 44-year-old Sharon Charlene Nederlander, who died in February 2005, according to state medical examiner reports.

These are some details I have collected which may help. I didn't find anything on the circumstances of some of their deaths, but got some obits and dates. The info is in a genealogy program just to keep it straight, so b.=born, d.=death, sp.=spouse. etc.

NN Arrowhead
    (b.  Aft 1972-Canadian, Pittsburg Co, Oklahoma, USA;
     d. _______)    sp: CARF (b. Sep 1966; m. _______)

        2008: vegetative state, federal lawsuit

I should have mentioned earlier but here is the info I was told a while back by an insider :

'Freddy died of a heart attack. He looked about 10 years older than his age, I was told. He was a grounds maintenance person there and was often cranky but well loved by staff and students. had done a lot of damage to himself ( previously ) as a heroin addict from New Mexico.  He was slow and stubborn, but mostly adored by staff.  By all accounts I've heard he was not using drugs or anything.'

Sandly, Jean Lafitte killed himself on the Narconon campus on or around New Year's Eve 2009  ... His body was found by Derry Hallmark, a single gunshot wound to the head.  He was in his 50's and had worked there for about ten years.  Happened ( a couple of years) after he divorced another staff member, who had posted a picture of her new boyfriend (whom she's now married to) on her Facebook page saying "now that's a real man"... (He was despondent still, I was told. A previous girlfriend had committed suicide many years before.)

That ex is Dena Bowman DannaSue Pruitt of Narconon Arrowhead staff.

'Sharon ( Nederlander), however, is a different story.  She is from money.  I believe the Nederlanders own(ed) a part of the Staples Center in L.A. at one point, although that could have been a myth.  I believe she was good friends with a prominent Scn family, though I am not sure who, just that Celebrity Centre was involved in some way.  Sharon was working at Arrowhead and booking radio interviews for people.  One day she came up missing.  Michael Anzalone was sent to go find her when her family called and said she had been in a hotel.  He got to the hotel and found her dead, where she apparently drank herself to death."

Her mother is Charlene Saunders Nederlander married to James M Nederlander, the Chairman of Nederlander Organization. They married in 1969 so not sure if Sharon and her sister Kristina Gustafson Nederlander took on the Nederlander name, were birthed out of wedlock or adopted by Nederlander.

She apparently graduated the NN program and stayed on, helping Arrowhead with it's radio ads and interviews and such when she went off the wagon.
Very sad. She was a seemingly talented person when she left the film industry.

Melendugno investigating the mysterious death at Narconon
La Repubblica, Italy
11 October 2002

A case of ill (delayed) treated peritonitis killed a woman at the community

LECCE - Maybe Federica, 33, could have been saved; the former drug addict fell ill at the Narconon Community in Torre dell'Orso, at Meledugno, and later died at the Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce. What killed her, says the autopsy, was a peritonitis. Drugs are not implied at all in the problems that have led to an attempted murder after her death: in fact, one of the community guests assaulted and stabbed an employee who did not sufficiently help the woman, and maybe underestimated her symptoms, according to the assaulter.

That pain was due to peritonitis: so says the autopsy of the woman, perfomed yesterday by the forensic [examiner] Alberto Tortorella, on behalf of the investigating magistrate of the Court of Lecce, Imerio Tramis. According to a first reconstruction, the woman was assisted at the therapeutical community at Torre dell'Orso by an employee of the facility, Rodolfo Savino, 45 of Mesagne, and driven to the hospital, where she died. Now it has to be determined what kind of assistance Federica got before arriving comatose at the emergency room of Vito Fazzi Hospital, on Monday.

According to first reports, the woman began to suffer stomach pain on Monday; she was driven to the first aid station in Meledugno where she was administered some painkillers, to no avail. Her state worsened during the night and she was driven to the hospital, where she died soon after her admission. The investigating magistrate ordered an autopsy to clarify the causes of her death.
The day after, the community employee who assisted the woman, Rodolfo Savino, was stabbed in the abdomen by Giovanni Costa, 32, who, before the assault, wrote a letter to his fellows urging them to hold out and go on with the program to its end. Costa was hold by Carabinieri soon after the assault, and was jailed with the charge of attempted murder. Savino will recover in 10 days.

Sigh...  I was hoping I wouldn't have to add any more, but at least these are old ones that we just didn't have on the list, and not new ones.

Found a bit more on Jocelyn Dorfmann at Wikipedia, while looking up "Frederica".

County Court of Dijon: judgment of January 9, 1987 (No 118-87)
The assistant director of the Narconon center in Grancey-sur-Ource (near Dijon) was convicted of lack of assistance to a person in danger and the Narconon center was closed.

Report of LA COMMISSION D'ENQUÊTE SUR LES SECTES (Board of Inquiry into Cults) (http://www.cftf.com/french/Les_Sectes_en_France/cults.html)

Quote
--- Translation --- The County Court of Dijon, in addition, was brought, in a judgement of January 9, 1987 (No 118-87), to condemn the director-assistant of the Narconon center of Grangey- on-Ource for nonassistance to someone in danger. This center, created by the Church of Scientology, proposes detoxification by applying the methods of Ron Hubbard, namely the procedure of "purification," based mainly on several hours of sauna per day, "auditions," and a significant absorption of vitamins. In this case, the victim had been in long-term treatment for epilepsy and had addressed this organization because she wished "to be released from drugs." The center A, without preliminary medical examination, placed her in a "weaning" room. However, the medical experts showed that her death was due to "an epileptic seizure due to the absence of sufficient treatment at its beginning and of emergency treatment during the seizure." The judgement does not leave any doubt about the responsibility of the center: "That if Jocelyne Dorfmann had made the decision to reduce her consumption of medication, then to stop it with the risk of compromising her health, the defendants had not at any time prevented it of the need for a medical examination of admission, which would have probably made it possible to contra-indicate the cure of weaning; that it is inconceivable that the victim could be accepted without this examination and serious treatment in spite of her declarations as to her health and her epilepsy, whereas the defendants admitted knowing that in the event of serious illness, medical treatment was not to suffer from interruption; "That if at the time the first crisis occurred, the defendants could mistake its exact nature, the repetition of the crises and their increasing intensity were to evoke to them an origin distinct from a state of lack which, according to medical experts, cannot be confused with an epileptic state; "That they did not consider it useful to directly ask the victim, while she was still conscious, if these demonstrations could correspond to the epileptic fits to which she had referred or to call upon the nearest doctor (...)""

1.  Cory Erving- son of Julius Erving aka Dr J.   Cory drowned after losing control of his car and going into a lake.  He graduate the program a week or so before.  They say no drugs were involved, but i suspect he was drunk after speaking with his family.

2.  I cant for the life of me remember the guys name, but he od'd on heroin the day after he graduated.  Left 4 beautiful daughters and his wife behind.  Nick something.

3.  I remember Gary Smith saying something about a couple native americans that were beaten to death after leaving the program.  Again, names slip my mind.

AND this ^^^ is very important information indeed. I know of several who died shortly
after leaving NN. As a Graduate Officer, I cringed at sending patients back to the same
drug infested environment from which they came from. I pleaded with Executives to have
a half-way house or other place that patients could go to, but I was laughed at.

They would just drop the patient off at the airport, not stay with them until boarding, and
the poor soul would end up drunk in the airport bar ,...., GGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

A month or so later, with a check in hand, they returned for a repair. OTHERS DIED!!!

We need to count them.  I noticed in the protest video at GA the guys yelling that 15 people died since 1985 or something.  Worldwide thats not that alarming of a stat and more than likely way less than most others facilities.  Theres a section in the nn ah archives for deceased students.  We need that list.  I think there is at least 10-15 in mich alone.  And thats only since their inception.  AH has substantially more.

Based on what I've seen on Ripoff Report and elsewhere, those statistics for the Michigan-related Narconons is not surprising.

David Reed Austin was a "word clearer" at Narconon Arrowhead in 2007. David was not afraid to show someone the truth when asked, I am sure NN AH didn't like this tactic. During my one and only eye to eye conversation with Gary Smith, David was one of the topics. Gary Smith stated "we took care of that; he no longer works here".

Well here is what NN AH did with David, when he started displaying erratic behavior, due to NN trying to send him overseas (Turkey most likely). They confined David to a cabin with two staff roommates. A few other staffers, out of genuine concern, would periodically check on him; These staffers are now SP's. David was sent home (PA) around late '07 or early '08.

On November 11th, 2008 David went into the woods around his home and ended his life.

David Austin helped set me free with the truth, but it could not set him free.

I had a very emotional conversation with David's mother 2 weeks ago. She gave me her blessings to send this out with one promise...."make it go far and wide".

I played their game for the next 6 days until David a Word Clear made things perfectly clear on what was being taught and practiced. After break I sat down with David, a “Word Clear”. I would like to say that David was one of the nicest and most forthcoming people that I meet there.

David and I sat down together for about 5 hours. He was asking several questions regarding the experiences I had during the TR0 eyes open session. I told him exactly what I just told you. David couldn’t outright give me the answers to the questions that I was asking, but he did show me where to find the answers. When I kept asking “what just happened to me” he told me to go outside have a cigarette, because he needed about 10 minutes to get his materials together, so I complied to his request.

After about 10 minutes we were sitting back down at his desk, and he had a little red book with him. He opened the book and pointed out a word to me and asked me to read the definition. The word was thetan: the person himself-not his body or his name, the physical universe, his mind, or anything else; that which is aware of being aware; the identity which is the individual. David told me that I just had my first encounter with my thetan. I had never heard of this word before, because it is a word only used by Scientology. David continued to ask me a number of questions, so I humbled him by answering them truthfully, even though I was not interested in his explanations anymore. David did tell me something that I didn’t agree with and that was, he believes that his body is his spirit, and that when he dies his Spirit will be re-incarnated into something else. Well, after hearing what he just told me I felt compelled to tell him what I believe, that is, pointing to my body is only a vessel for my Spirit. And when I die my Spirit leaves the vessel and goes home, my body is exactly that a body. I thought it was a very good exchange of beliefs between two intelligent people. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with David. He was the only person at Narconon that I talked to that was a stand up person, his beliefs are his beliefs, and to me that is a very respectable aspect to David’s personality.

Please forgive my grammar...WOW

R.I.P. David Reed Austin and thank you for showing me the truth.

Thanks snippy.  He was a good man at heart.  His death (and all the others) are completely unnecessary.  I should be on that list 5 times over, but for some reason, i am still here.  Their deaths wont be in vain!

I'm sure glad you're still with us, BMF.

Thanks to you and snippy for the additional information on his death. What a shame for his family and children!

Very sad. So sorry for this loss.

Thought of another.  Costas Raikos.  He was married to Vicki Smiths (Gary Smiths) daughter Rebecca Pool.  He was on staff at AH and died of an overdose after moving back to Mass when things didnt work out with Rebecca.  Left behind young kid.  So very sad.  He was a good guy at heart.

Again, so sad. What a waste.....
I knew him as well.  Didnt know that he had passed though.  Unfortunately it reminded me of another.

David Vantrease from NN stonehawk.  He killed himself as well shortly after reverting after being on staff and completing the program.  Damn it.

I'm glad we are adding these to the thread. People need to know that recovery is a life long process and Narconon's false success rate and false promises can be deadly.

I couldn't agree more, Mary. And BMF, NO one should be on that list!

I have come to believe that many who have contact with these people are put at considerable risk of more than just relapse. Their program is dangerous physically, but their "counseling" and their self-serving callous attitudes towards people's real struggles with life traumas is downright TOXIC, for "students" and staff alike. It breaks my heart the way they steal people's hope away for the sake of their own greed.

From a dear friend:
I didn't know he overdosed. This is getting harder and harder for me Colin. I know you understand when I tell you that these people are folks that I was in contact with on a daily basis, and Costas in particular I was very close with. The obituary posted is full of inaccuracies. Would be more than happy to set the record straight on several points, some of them very important points.

Mary - do you know how this case turned out? From the docket, the activity ended around Dec. 2011 but I can't decipher it. Mainly, I guess the question is,
"Was Narconon found to be negligent here?"

Title: Re: Narconon Deaths

I believe there was some kind of settlement but details were not available to the public. The emphasis of the case was against Bell and his mother. Narconon was brought in as information about Bell's stay there became available.

Settlements occur often with Narconon cases. This is why the Desmond case is so important. Depositions, internal dox, a publc trial! None have gone this far.

Damn, I just thought of another one.

Rob Pilatus of the group Milli Vanilli.  He died of an overdose after leaving NN.  I cant say much more publicly on how I know this.....

Quote
Death

In the years following the collapse of Milli Vanilli, Rob Pilatus struggled with substance abuse and even suicide attempts. After their unsuccessful comeback, Morvan and Pilatus stopped speaking to each other. In 1996, Pilatus served three months in prison for assault, vandalism, and attempted robbery. He also spent six months in drug rehabilitation, before returning to Germany from the United States.[11]

On April 2, 1998, on the eve of a promotional tour for a new completed Milli Vanilli album 'Back and in Attack', featuring Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan on lead vocals, Rob Pilatus was found dead at the age of 32 from a suspected alcohol and prescription pill overdose in a Frankfurt hotel room.[2][11] His death was ruled accidental. 'Back and in Attack' has never been released.[1

Quote
The Sad Truth
[..] Pilatus, though, continued his downward spiral: In December 1995, he attacked a man with a metal lamp base; the following month, he vandalized a home and slapped another man; the month after that, he slapped a man who caught him trying to break into his car. Pleading no contest to the three attacks (all of which took place in L.A.) and related charges in 1996, he was sentenced to three months in jail and six in rehab. It wouldn't be his last time in drug treatment (primarily for cocaine abuse). About a month before his death, he was interviewed in a rehab center on German TV, where he shocked viewers by remarking that he wanted to die; one associate believes that he'd been in rehab nearly a dozen times by then. I see that today is the 2 year anniversary of David Vantrease's death.  My condolences to his sister and the other 116 people on the Facebook page.   :.{....

I'm starting to think we need two threads, one for deaths that happened at Narconon, and one for deaths of people who had been to Narconon or worked for Narconon and later died, either because of relapse and overdose, suicide, or other unnatural reasons.  What do you all think?

I'm also considering enabling the "calendar" function on the forum so we can keep up with all the dates we need to.  I can make it so members with some to-be-defined number of posts can add to it.  Would that be helpful?

(Discussion about those two things can happen in this thread, then after it's done, I'll split it off into a separate thread.)

Ok, I'll play around with the calendar on the test forum to see how it works before I activate it.  It lets you add "events" and "holidays", and you can link them to a post or not.  I think the difference is that holidays are recurring, and events are not.

We've got so much stuff to remember!  I just found out yesterday was the last day of Sunshine Week (in honor of Open Records) - that's something we should celebrate - so I was sorry we missed it.  Then there's all these deaths, and other stuff like Red Ribbon Week, hearings, trials, lawsuits filed, etc.  We could probably fill up the calendar's days pretty fast.   :)

Last week was also Spring Break, and Brain Awareness Week, which don't really seem like they go together, but whatevah.   :D

 Kaysie Dianne Werninck.

Kaysie was a beautiful young woman who died due to the neglect of Narconon Arrowhead, neglect which is now being investigated by the State of Oklahoma as possible criminally negligent homicide.

Let's hope that a thorough job is done in bringing the whole truth out and that charges can be made against Narconon should they be found culpable.

Let's remember her today and days ahead and hope for justice for Kaysie and her loved ones.

Cross-posting here as it seems relevant...

I have a new post up (http://"http://infinitecomplacency.blogspot.com/2013/04/ignoring-epilepsy-i_3446.html?utm_source=BP_recent"), starting a sub-directory of the Narconon section.

In 1984, a French court convicted two Narconon staffers after a
woman died at their centre having suffered repeated epileptic seizures.
Was it their fault alone, or did their negligence spring from Scientology's
 teachings?

http://infinitecomplacency.blogspot.com/2013/04/ignoring-epilepsy-i_3446.html?utm_source=BP_recent (http://infinitecomplacency.blogspot.com/2013/04/ignoring-epilepsy-i_3446.html?utm_source=BP_recent)

While the death of Jocelyne Dorfmann has been previously reported,
I don't think there has been much apart from a brief summary that
appeared in a French government report. This account, drawing from
the court judgment itself, gives a little more detail and kicks off a look
at Scientology's attitude towards medicine in general and epilepsy in
particular, which I think is relevant to the Narconon debate.

Comments always welcome at the site.

I just happened upon a beautiful video in memory of .....oops!

another David Vantrease. ( deleted link)

His family was told his detox at another facility was taking too long, and he was told to leave. Combs reports that about a month later, Dacy was found dead in a ravine not far from his home. His parents are still trying to pay off the credit card balances for treatment their son never even received."

I've started another part to the list of Narconon Deaths for former students/staff who died from overdoses after going to Narconon.

Added:
Overdose Deaths After Attending Narconon
Note: I've decided to add the drug overdose deaths of people who went to Narconon because while they didn't die as a direct result of being in Narconon's care, Narconon does claim that they are a "cure" for addiction.  They are not.  The following list is evidence of that.

June 25, 2013, Joshua Kazuya Brittingham (http://forum.reachingforthetippingpoint.net/index.php/topic,1192.msg31860.html#msg31860), 30, drug overdose
Narconon Freedom Center, Albion, Michigan, former student and staff member

(Unfortunately, there are more to to be added when I can gather the list from the other posts in this thread and elsewhere.)

I'll go through this thread and gather any who have been listed and not added.  Meanwhile, if you know of any in other threads who haven't been added to this one, it would be helpful if you could add a link to the post where they are mentioned.  You can get the link directly to a specific post by clicking or copying the link for the subject line on the specific post.  Thanks for any help.   :)

I've also noticed I need to add Amber Bullins to the list of people who died while in the care of Narconon.

some more deaths that i thought of relating to NNAH.

1.  Cory Erving- son of Julius Erving aka Dr J.   Cory drowned after losing control of his car and going into a lake.  He graduate the program a week or so before.  They say no drugs were involved, but i suspect he was drunk after speaking with his family.

Hmmmmm. Never thought I'd write a bit of a eulogy, let alone here, but I think David would be amused by all this. So, as a friend and recovering (AA, not scientology) addict myself, guess I'll try and do my best.

About 4 years ago, David VanTrease, an addict, landed in Battle Creek, MI. Prior to that he had tried several 12 step treatment programs, but with limited success. Being smart, sometimes it's frustrating to find that we only seem to have one option. To sit in AA meetings and hear that we suffer from a "disease" and that we are "powerless" and that only God can remove our affliction. Sometimes we are told that being smart in AA is a liability. We are told to quit questioning and to turn our lives over to God.

David was smart. It wouldn't be uncommon for him to be reading Nietzsche and the Tao of Physics at the same time.

David found the Narconon program on the internet, after trying to find a different approach, and asked his family if he could try it. After being there for about a month, his family found that Narconon was connected to scientology and were quite upset. David asked to stay. He explained that most of the staff members were just ex-addicts and not scientologists. He explained that he wasn't being pushed into believing anything. By the time he finished the program, he agreed with much of it (taking responsibility, being ethical, taking control of your life). But there was some parts that he didn't. That's pretty much how it goes for most who graduate.

He signed on as a staff member, first working in Withdraw, then as a Course Supervisor. Prior to attending Narconon, he worked as a teachers aide for "in-crisis" kids. He apparently had a gift and a purpose towards helping others. When you have spent your life as an addict, being given the chance to help others who have addictions is a pretty good honor. It's a chance to help, to give life a bit more meaning.

David was a musician and a seeker. Never one to blindly follow anything, he sought answers. Tried Buddhism, Philosophy, Christianity, etc. He even tried out a couple of courses at the Church of Scientology. Again, he agreed with some, other parts he found a bit "out there".

After a few years working as a Course Supervisor at Narconon, he wanted to move on. Unfortunately, being a Course Supervisor is more of a "facilitator" than a teacher. You're not really allowed to teach. I think David was born to teach, myself. David quit his job at Narconon and applied to work at A Forever Recovery. At the time, it was a bit of an upset. It's not really considered that ethical to move from a Narconon to another treatment program. But, that was David.

At A Forever Recovery, he liked the approach. They weren't assuming that there was only "one way to recover". Although at Narconon, they "technically" couldn't push Scientology, it was sort of assumed that Narconon was the "best way" to recover. You were looked upon as a little odd if you pursued other avenues, especially as a staff member.

I guess the A Forever Recovery philosophy fit with him. Many addicts find that "one magical thing" that works. Many of us do not. Some people find success at Narconon and never become scientologists. Others find success there and do become scientologists. So people embrace AA, others don't.

David, like me, hated when people told us that there was "only one way" to recover. The Christians, the AAs, the scientologists. I guess he was still searching.

David helped a lot of people and tried to make a difference with his life. And then, about a week ago he left work, went home and took his own life. Sometimes it's easier to help others than ourselves...or even to ask for help.

Nobody saw it coming. I saw David about a month before. I talked to him a couple weeks ago. He was talking of the future. Things he wanted to do. How much he liked his new job.

There was no note...no dark conspiracy.

I wish that he had found what he was looking for. I wish he found it in the music that he liked to play when strumming his guitar. I wish that he found it in all the philosophy books he would read. I wish he found it in the Christian faith he was raised with in the South. I wish he found it in an AA meeting. I wish he had found it even in Scientology. And I wish that he found it at A Forever Recovery.

Why do I think David took his own life? Because sometimes it sucks being a drug addict trying to find answers.

David wasn't a statistic. Nor was he part of some grand conspiracy. He wasn't really 100% for or 100% against either side of the equation. He was just trying to find his way.

There is no "right" in these arguments. Times like these it's better to be kind than to be right. He was a friend to many people. He was someone's son. And in the end, I guess he was and still is a teacher. He taught me, through all this, to enjoy the moment. Enjoy the relationships that we have. For one day we may look up and find that they are gone.

Wow!  That's a helluva question.  As good as a session, it is!

Well, lessee here.  The goal of Scientology is to help a person lead a
better life in his own estimation. Does that constitute help?

I'm just guessing here, but I think you mean, "Did the person get off
drugs and stay off?"

Gary Smith, former ED Narconon US was not helped enough not to relapse
to heroin after completing OT3. Neither was Virgil Workman, the
Narconon reg. throughout most of the 80's, who OD'd after more than a
decade on Narconon staff..

Gary's wife, Debbie, left him and went off to eat burritoes and smoke
pot  in Cerritos with a Narconon student. The nicest people do.

Neither was Kim Hopkins, who was sent off to get more money for the
program, but drowned in a swimming pool. Free service equal free fall,
you know.

Frank Giampetro died of a suicide overdose. Hopeless about getting off
drugs, and hopeless about being gay.

Neither was Nick D'Ottavio whose parents sent him to Los Angeles from
New York and who did heroin the whole time he was here.

Neither was Rick Hays, one of the few peopleto actually attest to
completing the Narconon program, yet relapsed to heroin thereafter. Of
course, he completed his staff contract first.

Casey Green, also former Narconon staff, finished OT3 and shot a Santa
Barbara County Sheriff who was breaking down the door to his house as
part of a cocaine sales investigation.

Ben Gibson gave up Scientology for homosexual affairs with little
boys. Progress perhaps, but not exactly help.  Doesn't do drugs
though.

Jim Clemmens wasn't helped, although he slept with the Executive
Director, while the Senior C/S broken in the windows of his car with a
baseball bat. Went back to drugs, went back to jail.  That was Jeanne
Jurich, budding starlet and lead in "The Jeanne Jurich" Story. Ask her
about how she put hot spatulas on her nipples.

Mike Brock wasn't helped with his alcohol problem. He was hit in the
head with a baseball bat by the Dir of Inspections & Reports, Steve
Elkins. Narconon settled the case some time in 1984-1985.

Steve Elkins wasn't helped either. But he set the all-time record for
Purif redos after relapses. He was finally recruited for staff to save
his parents money. He was "fired" after hitting Brock in the head with
the baseball bat.

The minors who were illegal residential students weren't helped
either. Mike Brock was buying liquor for them.

Of course, if the tech had just been standardly applied, none of this
would ever have happened, right?

Phil Scott,

Can you supply the source where you got the information on all the
people who were not helped at NarCONon?

I think the people who live in the vicinity of the "new" NarCONon in
Oklahoma would like to have that information with evidence of course.

Some mother, whose son was in an auto accident (and two others were
killed) where the driver was a drunk NarCONon  staff, (in posts to OCMB)
also said something about someone getting pregnant at NarCONon Chilocco
and later committing suicide.  Do you have any information on that case?

Wow Phil, that's a lot of dope - I mean information - you dished out.
I find it extremely interesting. I was at Narconon Chilloco the entire
summer of 1996. The CofS sent me there as a sort of punishment - at my
own great personal expense of course. Cost me $18,900.00 and that was
for the mini-rehab program - about half the length of the full
Narconon program. That's what I get for being a 'bad' PC - doing too
many prescription drugs due to physical injuries and especially
thinking for myself and speaking out.

I will say one thing for Narconon though - the staff for the most part
truly seemed to have good intentions and tried to help but of course
they were thoroughly brainwashed zombies and a number of them
extremely whacked/incompetent ex-students of the program. One of the
staff was an LSD freak who had been in the sauna program for over a
year - I've never seen anyone whose brain was more fried than this
guy's - yikes!

Three of the "student's" there with me were junkies on their second
full retread through the Narconon program. Two of these had big time
'sugar daddy' Scientologists paying for their ride.

Shortly after I left one of the guys from Millie and Vanilli - the lip
syncing Grammy winning artists - entered the program. He was in the
program for awhile. Swindled $3,000.00 from one of my friends that was
still in the program then had someone break him out. Not too long
after that he was found dead in a hotel room in Munich, Germany - a
suicide.

IT was a repost from an anon source.   Not my data.  Verifiable only by the fact
of narconons recorded history in *some of the events related, and its larger
history of being an unworkable cultie operation.

Thats how data leaks out, then next thing you know more witnesses come forward
to verify it or not and testify in court, produce affidavits and write books.

Maybe any of the  'libeled' sources will sue  :)   that would be interesting.
Discovery being what it is and all.

Thanks.. I knew about Levi's passingfrom the Narconon alumni facebook. I though someone posted that he died in a car accident. I'll have to go back and check.

Update: Sorry, it appears he may have OD'd or died from hypothermia. Here is an early article about his body being found...

Linda Blagg My Michigan family is in my complete circle of Love even though I have lived in Colorado for 32 years. I just made my circle bigger by moving . You can never have too many people who love you or you Love. Loss is such as heartache that you don't even realize until you lose someone to death...until it happens. I, unfortunately know this too well. Always remember that those in your heart never, ever leave us ! They are in our lives, emotions, thoughts, memories and are a Gift from God. Where would we be without their Love ? I am so sorry to hear of the many whom have lost their lives and left so many grieving. Pray, hug, cry.....be considerate of the family and their guaranteed change in personallity. Their lives will never be as they were...but, you can be compassionate and kind at the least

Oh dear.  More names to investigate:

I've finished updating the first post with the information in this thread up until the quoted post above  (quoted as a place-marker for me).  I decided to add the list of overdoses after attending Narconon (mentioned before) and unfortunately found it necessary to add a 3rd list, one of those who are permanently disabled in some way because Narconon did not live up to its promises of a cure for addiction.

I've been adding the "More on ----" posts so I could link the names of the "death by overdose" and "disabled" people to somewhere more information can be found.  I'd like to do that with the deaths at Narconon list too, but it will have to be later.  Links to more information about them are embedded in this thread somewhere.

escapee, thanks for adding the ones you did, and Mary, thanks for the details I need to put them on the list (TBD).  If you (or someone) would post a message to the Facebook conversation you quoted to let these people know about the list, it would be great.  Perhaps they can fill in the details of those people and we can add them too.

I wonder if the FB people ever had their IRL reunion?

The info actually came from a group member's Facebook, so I don't have ability to post there and she most certainly won't add me as a friend. She is friends with many of the people she did the program with and somehow a comment by her in the group lead me to her Facebook profile, which then lead me to that thread.

I didn't see any indication there if they had the reunion but I'm sure it did... they are pro-narconon grads, in case you didn't know that.

No, I didn't know that.  The way they were going on about all the Narconon "failures" and people who died - how people can deny what's right before their very eyes...  sad...

Those aren't all pro Nn people on that thread!!!;-) ;-) and I assure you that not all of those people are pro NARCONON  either even Lisa herself may think the the program saved her..but she also has a big problem with them also there is a lot of people on there who have been fired! Just saying this cause I wouldent doubt some of those people would love to get on here and vent! Worth a shot lol

And ether cat we never did have that reunion :-( would have been a blast

Here's another sad death (aren't they all?) of someone who was kicked out of Narconon and died a week later.  There are very few details, not even a name, but we shall call him "DP Sr.'s son".

Anyone know more about this case?

Unfortunately, the arson/homicide suspect is not named in the article.

Laraine Shape, technical director of Narconon and head of CoS Miami in '78, is mentioned in comments at Tony Ortega's Underground Bunker a few days ago.

Quote
... it's Lorraine Shape and not a volunteer, but OSA, if still in.

She also had a brother and both from Miami. He left Miami around '78. Dated him a couple times. Never ran into him in CW. I would've recognized Norm, but didn't hang with Gabe's crowd and he may have gone by the time I got there. That's probably why they told me to keep far way from Gabe, beside other reasons. Plus didn't get there til the beginning of '80.

I'm behind on my deposition reading.

Larraine's probably still in scn if she's writing for Psych-Times, but her last article was posted 9/19/13.

Very sad story. No details on who lit the fire. Shelly's mother Jacqueline, however,  sued Narconon and it's insurance company back in 1980. Records are long gone except that the case was on and then closed in 1981. I gather they came to a settlement.

MCLAUGHLIN, ADAM MATTHEW 27 - passed away unexpectedly on December 14th, 2013. Adam was born on August 8, 1986 and raised in Brigantine, NJ. He attended Holy Spirit High School and Dixie State University. His life was anchored on the water from an early age where he learned to navigate the world. Realizing his lifelong dream, he traded in the highways for waterways and sailed across many parts of the world as a Merchant Mariner aboard the Maersk Missouri. Adam was a USCG licensed Captain at his family's business, Sea Tow Atlantic City and Marco Island. He was a dedicated member of Local 25 and the Seafarers International Union. Despite his own struggles, Adam was greatest known for his heart and willingness to put others ahead of himself. His compassion was a gift to all of those he met. Adam was happiest spending time with his family & will be deeply missed by every-one whose lives he touched. Adam is survived by his loving parents, John and Sandra (nee Clark) McLaughlin; brother, Eric McLaughlin; and sister in-law, Jennie; nephew, Eric; and niece, Reese; grandparents, Alexander and Marilyn; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins. A memorial gathering will be 10AM to 12PM, Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Reformation Lutheran Church, Route 9 at Biscayne Ave., Absecon. A service will follow immediately at 12PM. Such conflicting emotions here.  They mention donating money to Narconon so that someone else can come there.

Which leads me to believe that they probably don't know about the false success rates, even though their own succumbed to addiction.

I kind of hope they never realize it was a scam.  But I wish they would donate somewhere else that doesn't have such a history of dishonesty.

Hopefully the money doesnt make its way to the IAS via the Steiners.  They are big time donors to the "church".  NN LA is their cash cow.

This kind of thing happened before, with a donation to one of the Narconons (can't remember which one, Arrowhead, I think).  The mother found out about Narconon later.  Colin talked to her about it; she regretted that donations had been made in her daughter's name, but she didn't know - probably like this family.  Very sad...   :(

I wonder if he was working there at the time.

Two that we've missed.

Justin Smith, 22
Chad Skoglie, 27
Quote
This case concerns the death of Justin Smith, 22 years old, following a July 13, 2000
collision when he drove his 1966 Mustang to excessive speed and it went off the road (a
few hundred yards from the turnoff to Narcononís Watsonville facility) and hit a tree.

Justin was a client at the Narconon facility in Watsonville, and the allegation is that
Narconon staffer Scott Friend wrongly provided Justin the keys to his vehicle while he was
involved in treatment (which enabled the accident to occur). It is not believed that drugs or
alcohol were a factor in this accident, per the initial CHP report.

There were also 3 other persons in that vehicle, and of them a fellow client (Chad Skoglie,
age 27) also died, and two Narconon staffers (Eric Petersen, age 31, and John Vereeke, age
33) were seriously injured.

Justin's mother founded The Justin Foundation (http://thejustinfoundation.org) after Justin's death:
Quote
Mission Statement

The Justin Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation committed to assisting individuals and families affected by drug abuse and to furthering formal education and certification of addiction recovery counselors.  It is our goal that every alcohol and drug rehabilitation treatment facility be a safe place for those in need to heal from the disease of addiction.

Dedication
The Justin Foundation, this website and this work are dedicated to the memory of Justin Smith, a young man who touched many people during his lifetime and who, through this work, continues to touch the lives of many people today.

   Justin Michael Smith
   Born April 11, 1978
   Died July 13, 2000

I have a bit more on this and will get it up on Narconon Reviews when I do the next round of document updates.

Occasionally I've heard from pro Narconon people something along the lines of "addiction takes many lives and you can find where people die just as often outside of Narconon".

At first this seems like a legitimate statement.

However, what I've noticed with Narconon is that there are things that would never occur in a legitimate treatment center.  This is an example.

Quote

Hazelden or Betty Ford would never find themselves in a situation where a staff member decided to give their car keys to a current client in treatment, and go for a joyride with another client and staffer.

If you've gone to school for many years you tend to learn what is appropriate and what isn't.  Recent graduates who become staff never learn much of anything along those lines.

I've heard from many people about the level of fraternization that occurs at Narconon that isn't seen at other centers.  Staff flirting with students, staff having sex with clients, staff providing and using drugs with clients, etc.  scientology tends to make the fatal mistakes of saying "now that you've completed our 2 week course you are more able than others in the real world with decades of experience".

And the scary part is that they then sell their staff as equal or better.

If I see the word "trained staff" on another Narconon website, I'll probably puke.  Trained can mean trained to clean a floor.  It doesn't mean trained to handle acute drug addiction, at least not in Narconon, made evident by these types of things that occur.

When Narconon talks about all the training they learn to communicate better, parents rarely know that this training consists of hours reading Alice in Wonderland over and over out loud.  Training someone to confront their addiction means sitting in a chair and staring at another person for hours.  Training to control, in Narconon, is hours of telling another person to "look at that wall.  Thank you.  Touch that wall.  Thank you."

Any family that actually saw the training that goes on at Narconon would be horrified that these people are now in charge of their kids life.

Narconon would probably say that an incident like this is a rarity.  Reading peoples descriptions of their experiences at Narconon tend to make me believe that these are not rarities but commonplace.

Another Narconon-related death. Jacob went to Sunshine Summit Lodge, did an internship and became a recruiter.

Jacob Joseph Heider, Los Angeles, CA/formerly Milton, WI (1987-2014)

September 21, 1987 - February 19, 2014

Jacob Joseph Heider, son of Lori Blum and James Heider, passed away Feb. 19, 2014, in Los Angeles, CA, due to a heroin overdose. Jacob was born in Janesville, WI, on Sept. 21, 1987. He attended Milton Area Schools until he was accepted to the Wisconsin Challenge Academy, where he received his high school diploma. While at the academy, he excelled in many challenges receiving the “character development” award. Jacob entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Honolulu, HI. It was at this time his addiction became apparent. Jacob came home in hopes of finding a job and facing his addiction. During this time, Jacob had many jobs, but continued to struggle with his addiction. After the birth of his daughter, Kylee Rae, Jacob realized he needed help with his addiction. He entered into Sunshine Summit Lodge Narconon in Warner, CA. It was there that Jacob broke free of heroin, began to rebuild his foundation in hopes of a better life for himself and his daughter. He focused on eating healthy, working out, and finding the tools that would help him battle the demon (heroin) that took control of his life. Upon completion of the program, Jacob completed an internship and became a recruiting specialist for Narconon. With Jacob's strength and Narconon, the last 7 months of his life were the hardest, yet the happiest.

Jacob will forever be missed by his daughter, Kylee Rae; the mother of his child, Shawna Nordberg; his always and forever mother, Lori Blum; his father, James Heider; his brother, Kole Farnsworth; his sisters: Ceaira Weber, Cortney Calkins, Kassy (Nate) Berge, Kara (Alex) Royster; great-grandmother, Dorothy Heider; grandparents: Jacob Blum, Jim and Sandy Weber; aunts and uncles: Beverly (Richard) Pogorelski, Nancy (Douglas) Cumming, Jane Olson, Shannon Weber, Shelly (Jeremy) Schaitel, Shelby Weber, Shawn (Laurie) Weber, Ann (Dan) Cone, Eugene (Amy Williams) Heider; special friend, Nick Morrill; and many cousins and friends. Waiting for Jacob in heaven were his great-grandparents: Albert and Mae Hahn, Martin and Clara Blum, Joseph Heider; grandparents: Dora Blum, Laura Blum, Anton Heider, Judith McKinney; Step-father, Shane Weber; and uncle, Michael Blum.

Visitation will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. with funeral service at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at ALBRECHT FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATION SERVICES in Milton WI. Pastor Bill Beyer will officiate. A celebration of Jacob's life will follow at The Cove Bar, 319 Parkview Dr., Milton WI.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Sunshine Summit Lodge

Never stop doing what you do!

When my time comes, forget the wrong that I've done and help me leave behind some reason to be missed, don't resent me and when you're feeling empty, keep me in your memories, leaving out all the rest.

Yeah... I saw that last March... Anons are on top of things, for sure. Sent a link to Ryan Hamilton as a FYI. Forgot to mention it here. So hard to keep up with all that is going on.

That job would drive anyone to drink ( or blow their recovery ). However, I think staff must have known of the problem before hand.

Jacob worked at the Glendale reg sales office. Not sure if he was working under Chris Bauge of the Narconon Scripts fame, who is no longer working there.  http://tonyortega.org/2013/03/11/leaked-scripts-spell-out-how-scientology-directs-the-unsuspecting-to-its-rehab-network/

I heard that Bauge left in late 2013. I also hear it was more recent. I heard he was fired. Will post separately on him in the script thread when I have more specific details on when and why he left. Important to get the facts, not rumor. :)

A Narconon-related death in Italy and a google translation of the article.

Tragedy in lane | 22 year old Neapolitan escapes to the doctors and is thrown from hospital window (http://www.ilmattino.it/PRIMOPIANO/CRONACA/sfugge-ai-medici-si-butta-da-terzo-piano-ospedale-muore/notizie/855241.shtml)

GALATINA - One moment and the drama is consumed leaving no room for words. Then explode the despair and anger. A young Neapolitan, LI 22 years old, yesterday afternoon was thrown into space from the third floor of one of the fire escapes the hospital in Galashiels. A flight of about twelve feet. A gesture that contains a history of certain problems and weaknesses, and that is the culmination of an arduous tour of several stages.

The boy was a guest of the community Narconon "The Seagull", a center for drug and alcohol detoxification, Tower Bear. An operator had gone directly to Naples to take the young man to accompany him in Salento. Tower has come to us, however, realized that the situation was complicated because the 22 year old appeared in withdrawal symptoms.

Together with a colleague, the operator then decided to hospitalize him. According to the testimony seems to have been first alerted the 118 but stressed that they could not send an ambulance for this thing and called on operators to bring the young man in the car directly in Lecce.

"And if you throw the car?". With this fear, revealed itself in no uncertain terms to health, the kids Narconon they headed Lecce, but the "Vito Fazzi" would have told them that there was no place and that they should head to Galashiels. They have done it and once the "Santa Caterina Novella" went directly to the Department of Psychiatry. But there they were told that the hospital would have had to first go to the ER.

The boys insisted that the health care were holding onto 22 year old with them, constantly worried about its growing state of crisis. We have seen, however, forced to follow the process and get to the emergency room.

The drama was consumed in those moments. The young man broke away from them and started to run. The operators of the Narconon chased him to try to reach it and lock it, but that was no hassle in going up the fire escape. And from there he climbed over the railing and launched into space. It seems to have died instantly, even though some of the first noticed next to him would have reported some last gasp of the young man before permanently close the eyes.

All stunned, unable to find peace especially boys who accompanied him, and who, while realizing the situation, they could not do anything but follow the protocol.

On the spot intervened the Police Commissioner of Galashiels. The body of the poor 22 year old is already available to family members who have been advised of the tragedy and who are already traveling to reach the Salento.

This would have NEVER happened if the poor 22 year old has been given a proper medical detox. This is Narconon at it's worst. Pretending to provide an alternative 'detox' for any addiction, when it's not designed to treat addiction withdrawal. Especially if a patient has mental health issues.

I'm glad they realized they needed to get him to a hospital but it was, as Hubbard said " Too little, too late". They should have known the potential for
such a problem, just based upon the type of drug he was withdrawing from.

Thank you. I'm just going by what I know of the program and what was written in the article, as hard as it was to grock the translation as a whole, lol. It was very clear to me that he suffered in withdrawal. Think Richard Teague's withdrawal mess at A Forever Recovery ( and medical detox, to boot! ) being sent back to Narconon Freedom Center too early and setting himself on fire during extended withdrawal.

Some addictions are worse than others but all deserve to be treated appropriately by acceptable standards. That is a foreign term to Narconon. It's clear that this 22 year old and his loved ones were betrayed.

Tragedy in a hospital - 22-year old Neapolitan man flees from a hospital and throws himself out of a window

by Valentina Chitano
August 20, 2014
Il Mattino

GALATINA - The drama unfolded in the blink of an eye, before a word could be uttered. Then followed an explosion of despair and anger. Yesterday afternoon, a 22-year-old Neapolitan man whose initials are L.I. threw himself out from the third story of one of the fire escapes of a hospital in Galatina, falling nearly 12 meters, a gesture that reflects a personal story, no doubt one of problems and vulnerability, and marks the final chapter of a troubled life.

The young man was a guest at Narconon "Il Gabbiano," a center for drug and alcohol detoxification located at Torre dell'Orso. A Narconon employee had travelled directly to Naples to meet the young man and accompany him to Salento. When they arrived in Torre dell'Orso, however, he realized that the situation was complicated because the 22-year-old appeared to be suffering severe withdrawal symptoms.

Together with a colleague, the Narconon employee then decided to take the young man to a hospital. According to accounts of what happened, the first action taken was to call the emergency services number 118, but the operator insisted that an ambulance could not be dispatched for this and that the Narconon employees should drive the young man directly to Lecce.

"What if he throws himself out from the car?" Having stated this fear bluntly to the operator, the Narconon employees headed to Lecce, but the Vito Fazzi Hospital allegedly told them that there was no available bed and that they should head to Galatina. They did this and, when they arrived at the Santa Caterina Novella Hospital, they went directly to the psychiatric ward, where they were told that they first had to go through the emergency room before the young man could be admitted.

The Narconon employees insisted that the medical staff should keep the 22-year-old with them, because they were constantly worried about his worsening state. They were nevertheless obliged to follow procedure and go to the emergency room.

This is when the drama unfolded. The young man broke away from them and started to run. The Narconon employees ran after him in an attempt to catch up and stop him, but the young man very quickly went out onto a fire escape, and from there he climbed over the railing and leaped out. It appears that he died instantly, even though some initial accounts mention final gasps before he expired.

Everyone was stunned, unable to compose themselves, especially the employees who accompanied the young man, although they had no choice other than to follow protocol.

Police from Galatina soon arrived on the scene. The body of the unfortunate 22-year-old has already been released to his family, which was advised of the tragedy and is already on its way to Salento.

There is also question whether the emergency number (118, Italy's version of 911) was called:

Their clues are being fed to them via lawsuits and judges.  That's unfortunately all they hear and even then they need a hearing aid.

Suicide of a 22-year-old Naples man in a hospital after a 4-hour ordeal to seek admission - investigation opened

by Maddalena Mongiò
August 21, 2014

Less than twenty-four hours after the tragedy, the ASL local health authority has launched an internal investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the suicide of a 22-year-old Naples man, Luca Izzo. Yesterday morning, Galatina police sent a detailed report to prosecutor Giuseppe Capoccia. The report provides facts, witness testimony, and observations collected at the scene where the young man took his own life, the Santa Caterina Novella Hospital in Galatina.

The man had arrived in Salento on Tuesday morning at the Narconon "Il Gabbiano" rehab center, located at Torre dell'Orso in the Melendugno marina, to free himself from a drug addiction, but instead, on Tuesday afternoon, he took his own life by jumping from the fourth floor of the Santa Caterina Novella Hospital in Galatina during a very difficult wait to obtain admission to the hospital.

It is now up to the ASL internal investigation to shed light on the sequence of events and to assess potential responsibility, if any, on the part of medical staff involved in the incident. Though the ASL is investigating, it is possible that the prosecutor might also open an investigation within the next few hours, because the family is upset over the death.

The young man twice attempted suicide on the last day of his life: once inside the Narconon center, a second time in the emergency room of the Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce. At about noon on Tuesday, just moments after his arrival at the Narconon center, he exhibited severe agitation caused by withdrawal symptoms. He became so agitated that he repeatedly banged his head against a wall.

Three Narconon employees made him get into a car and drove him to the emergency room at Vito Fazzi Hospital. There he was kept under observation for three hours, sedated, and subjected to psychiatric examination. The psychiatrist who saw him did not find grounds for mandatory medical treatment and, after being given medication that lessened the effects of his drug withdrawal, the young man signed a voluntary discharge form.

The lull did not last long. Within a half-hour, the Narconon employees had to take Luca back to the Vito Fazzi Hospital emergency room because he had found a pair of scissors somewhere and was threatening to slash his wrists. At that point, the psychiatrist was called to the emergency room, and she explained to the young man that he should stay at the hospital. Unfortunately, however, there was no bed available in the psychiatric ward at Vito Fazzi Hospital. A phone call was made to the Department of Psychiatry at the hospital in Galatina and an empty bed was found. How to get there? No ambulance was available, so the Narconon employees had no choice: they got back in their car to drive to the hospital in Galatina.

It was now late afternoon, about 6 p.m. The Narconon employees took the young man straight to the psychiatric ward, but he could not be admitted because he first had to fill in the admission form in the hospital's emergency room. This leg of the journey was fatal to Luca. One of the Narconon employees entered the emergency room to complete the formalities, while the other two employees and the young man waited outside the hospital. It was now almost 6:30 p.m. The ordeal had lasted more than four hours. The young man bent over, took off his shoes, and began running to his death, followed by the Narconon employees. The young man climbed up the fire escape and, on the fourth floor, where the Narconon employees were one meter away from him, he leaped out. With the flight of an angel, a young life was gone, leaving behind him pain, dismay, and many questions.

I have translated that article. Here it is:

GALATINA-less than 24 hours after the tragedy there is an internal investigation of the Asl to clarify the suicide of the 22-year-old Neapolitan Luca Izzo. But already yesterday morning an inquest has been opened by Commissioner of Galatina for the public minister, Giuseppe Capoccia. In the report, the facts have been reported, testimonies and evaluation of the spot where the boy took his life, at the hospital Santa Catarina Novella, in Galatina.

The young man had arrived in the Salento Tuesday morning at the Centre of Narconon detoxification "Il Gabbiano" of Torre dell'Orso, Marina di Melendugno to free himself from drug dependence, but in the afternoon of the same day, however, took his life by jumping from the fourth floor of the hospital "Santa Caterina" Novella of Galatina, waiting for a hospital bed that was not available.

And now, the ASL is trying to shed light on the dynamics and facts to ascertain any liability, if there are any, on the part of the hospital staff, at various levels. Investigations are ongoing with the Asl, but is not exclude that even the Prosecutor may open in the next few hours an investigation, partly because the family are not simply resigning to the fact that their son's body is being returned to them.

The boy, during the last day of his life, attempted suicide twice: once inside the Narconon Center, and a second time in the emergency room of the hospital "Vito Fazzi" of Lecce. Around noon on Tuesday, having just arrived in the Centre, he had shown severe shaking due to a withdrawal. He was agitated to the point of hitting his head against the wall.

Three operators of Narconon got him into a car and he was taken to the emergency room of the Fazzi hospital. Here he was kept in observation for three hours, sedated and underwent a psychiatric examination. The psychiatrist who visited him had not considered, however, that obligitory treatment was necessary and the boy was administered drugs that subdued the effects of withdrawal symptoms from Narcotics, and then the boy signed a volontary dimission document.

But it lasted only a short time. Half an hour later, the operators brought Luca to the emergency room of Fazzi hospital again because, with a pair of scissors, taken from who knows where, he had attempted to cut his veins. At that point, the psychiatrist was called to the emergency room for a consultation. The boy was explained about the opportunities of hospitalization: A pity, though, that in the psychiatric ward of the Fazzi there was no room available. A phone call to the Department of Psychiatry of Galatina was made and here a free bed was found. But how to get there? There was no ambulance available and so the Narconon operators had no choice: back in to their car to get to the hospital Galatinese.

It was now late afternoon, around 18. The Narconon operators brought the boy directly to the ward but he could not be taken in because beforehand he had to be admitted through the emergency room. This was fatal for Luca. One of the operators went to the emergency room for the formalities while the other two operators and the young boy waited outside the hospital. It was now almost 18.30 and after over four hours of suffering, the boy bent over, took off his shoes and started running towards his death, chased by the operators. The boy climbed a fire escape staircase to the fourth floor, and when the operators were just a meter away from him, he threw himself off the building: an Angel and a young life gone. Leaving all around him sorrow, dismay, and many questions to be answered.

Local health authority investigating suicide of the 22-year-old:
"Not everything is clear. We will bring the facts to light"

by Maddalena Mongiò
August 23, 2014

GALATINA - The ASL local health authority has opened a commission of inquiry to assess potential responsibility for the suicide of a 21-year-old Naples man, Luca Izzo (he would have turned 22 in October) who, late on Tuesday late afternoon, took his own life by jumping from the fourth floor of a fire escape outside Santa Caterina Novella Hospital in Galatina. The young man's body has already been delivered back to Naples and, at noon yesterday morning, the body was cremated.

"We've received the reports from the hospital managers," says Valdo Mellone, director general of the Lecce ASL, "but not everything is clear. The circumstances that have been reported do not warrant any immediate disciplinary action, but to dispel any doubt, we've decided to establish a commission of inquiry presided by the medical director, Ottavio Narracci. Dr. Alberto Tortorella and two or three other persons will certainly also be part of the commission. I'm presently taking this into consideration."

The first chapter has now begun, and it could not be otherwise, because there is a family that has the right to know how and why a young man who wanted to better his future returned home in a coffin.

The ASL would have preferred that an autopsy be performed, but since the young man had not been formally admitted to hospital, permission had to be requested from the public prosecutor's office. The answer was no, because the body had already been released and, as mentioned earlier, cremated. The evidence that an autopsy would have provided will therefore not be available.

Many questions have been left dangling, questions that cannot be answered. The young man's leap has left a trail of pain and dismay, along with a host of questions. The ASL is investigating, but it is possible that the prosecutor's office might also open an investigation because the family is very upset over this death.

On Wednesday morning, the Galatina police commissariat sent prosecutor Giuseppe Capoccia a detailed report which provides facts, witness testimony, and observations collected at the scene where the young man took his own life. For Luca Izzo, it was all over in a matter of hours. He had decided to go to rehab and, with his family, had chosen Narconon "Il Gabbiano" at Torre dell'Orso, a rehabilitation center where former addicts, once they have emerged from the tunnel of drug dependence, help other young people chase away the "monkey," as drug addiction is called in their jargon. The center is private and a monthly fee has to be paid for access. On average, the detoxification period requires a stay of at least three months.

Narconon employees went to Naples on Tuesday morning to meet Luca Izzo and take him to the center. He had just arrived when, around noon, he began to show signs of strong agitation caused by severe withdrawal symptoms. When he began banging his head against a wall at the center, Narconon decided to take him to the emergency room. According to statements released by the Narconon legal affairs officer, Alessandro Troso, there was no time to ask the doctor who checks the health of Narconon's guests every morning for a consultation.

Three Narconon employees took the young man to the emergency room at Vito Fazzi Hospital, where he was kept under observation for three hours, sedated, and underwent a psychiatric examination. In the meantime, the medication abated the effects of his drug withdrawal, and he signed a voluntary discharge form. Then, after a suicide attempt with a pair of scissors, the psychiatrist recommended voluntary admission. Vito Fazzi Hospital had no available bed and no ambulance to transfer him to Galatina. He arrived in at Santa Caterina Hospital in Galatina with the Narconon employees, but while waiting for the formal admission procedure, he escaped and leaped to his death.

Tony Ortega reported on a California, Narconon-related death in 2010 at The Underground Bunker (http://tonyortega.org/2014/09/11/scientologys-drug-rehab-system-was-investigated-for-a-2011-california-death/).

The state's investigation (http://www.scribd.com/doc/239357011/Narconon-Watsonville-2010-Death-Investigation) was the result of a complaint that was filed with the Calilfornia Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs. A total of 8 deficiencies were cited and all were substantiated. Not surprisingly, some discrepancies exist between the patient record and statements made by Narconon employees who were interviewed by the state surveyor.

One of the citations involved Narconon making misrepresentations to the state.

The reason the file was not initially located and why an inaccurate statement was made is because our storage for archived files was too full and had become disorganized. We have since purchased an additional 10 x 40 storage container to house archived files. We have re-organized all of our files, by year, alphabetically and with master lists, to ensure that files are easily found and well organized.

Their CAP, in this instance, is reminiscent of Narconon of Georgia's problems with record-keeping in the Desmond case. These folks just have trouble keeping up with their records and emails! I wonder who has access to the medical records?

Probably, only the people charged with protecting consumers are denied access to them.  |\/|8-P

A nurse, interviewed by the CDADP's Complaint Analyst, stated the patient had declined to go to the emergency room. However, the record states that the patient requested to be transported to the ER at least once. Unfortunately, we only have a portion of a heavily redacted record. I'm baffled as to why dates, temperature readings and the reported cause of death were redacted?

Several notations about the patient's temperature were made in the medical record by a nursing assistant. She documented several times that the temperature would be re-checked within a certain period of time. The documentation for the re-checks was not always found in the patient record. I'm going out on a limb here and assuming the patient's temp was elevated. Was the lack of documentation negligence on the part of the nursing assistant? Was a portion of the medical record altered/omitted?

According to the RN, the patient was "closely monitored' and seen by a Nurse Practitioner. The nursing assistant was no longer working for Narconon.

At any rate, Narconon submitted their CAP for all 8 deficiencies. Despite the misrepresentation and difficulties locating records, CDADP accepted the CAP - end of story.

The CDADP no longer exists as of July 1 2013.

Now, CA DCHS is in charge. As this information just recently came to light, I'm assuming they released the heavily redacted records.

I have one question for the California DHCS. WHO ARE YOU PROTECTING?

I've had documents on this death for about 2 years now, mefree. They were obtained by another person through the state FOIA process. We did not publicize the story because the family was so distraught.. it took them several complaints over time to get the investigation done. The complaints were being treated as separate ones and then droopped. Finally it all got pulled together into one and investigated.

The family did not want it made public. I and another person encouraged the family members to contact the attorneys who were then taking Narconon Northern CA cases at the time, particularly John Hannon, but they never followed through. The statute of limitations then expired. It's very hard when you have a grieving family not wanting you to speak out but I had to respect their wishes.

So, I do have a bunch of docs that will be going up about this case. They are redacted by the state and in some places we had to redact the patient's name which somehow slipped through their editing process. This is one of several sensitive matters that I have been working on when I have time. Now that Tony posted about it, I will try to get it all up soon on Narconon Reviews.

I imagine it's easy to miss an item for redaction in a large document. OTOH, in light of the families wishes and the heavy redaction, I find it interesting that the client's name was left unredacted on one page.

Thanks for the background info, Mary.

This is a follow-up story to one that Tony O. wrote in November involving another death.

Scientology officials panicked about overdose death of star Narconon pupil: Boyfriend - Tony Ortega's The Underground Bunker (http://tonyortega.org/2016/03/04/scientology-officials-panicked-about-overdose-death-of-star-narconon-pupil-boyfriend/#more-29153)

Quote
In November, we told you about the death of Tabatha Lynn Fauteux, a 26-year-old New Hampshire woman who was found dead in a Los Angeles apartment, apparently of a drug overdose. She had been staying at the apartment with a boyfriend for several weeks while the two of them underwent training in the Church of Scientology’s revamping of its drug rehab program, Narconon. Before they went to L.A. for the training, the two of them had been working together at Narconon’s clinic in Harlingen, Texas and had each been sober for about a year.

Tabatha died on November 6, and for our story later that month, we talked to her father, Guy Fauteux, 52, who was still struggling to get details about his daughter’s death. He was unhappy that he was getting little information from Scientology and Narconon, and he also hadn’t heard from Los Angeles or California authorities. But he had heard from Tabatha’s friends that while she was in L.A. she had used an herbal drug known as kratom, a legal substance which produces a high something like the heroin addiction she had sought treatment for. As we pointed out in our story, there have been increasing reports of overdose deaths with kratom because it can be laced with powerful, synthetic drugs.

Now, the Underground Bunker has spoken to Tabatha’s boyfriend, who was with her in Los Angeles. Guy Fauteux confirmed the young man’s identity for us, but we are holding back the boyfriend’s real name at his request and will refer to him as Nick.

Narconon continues to lose staff members to addiction. A former staffer claims recent changes to the program have contributed to the deaths.

Our story last week about Narconon deaths kicked up a fuss — and news of two more deaths]Our story last week about Narconon deaths kicked up a fuss — and news of two more deaths - The Underground Bunker - Tony Ortega (http://tonyortega.org/2016/10/16/our-story-last-week-about-narconon-deaths-kicked-up-a-fuss-and-news-of-two-more-deaths/)

Rod Keller’s story last week about former staff members of Scientology drug rehabs dying produced some fascinating results. Here he is to follow up…

Last week, we reported on (http://tonyortega.org/2016/10/09/exclusive-recent-deaths-of-scientology-rehab-staffers-points-to-ongoing-problem/) the deaths of three young men who had worked at Scientology’s “Narconon” drug rehab centers, and we talked to other former Narconon workers who told us they knew about several other recent deaths as well. They charged that Narconon centers offer no continuing care, and don’t even tell former patients and employees to remain strictly sober.

Now, our sources have identified two more Narconon staff members who relapsed and died in recent years.
