Roommate detained at Narconon - McAlester News-Capital Sunday Edition

CRIME WATCH | Police called for help when rehab facility bars woman’s departure

A young woman says she was held against her will at Narconon Arrowhead and her mother had to call Pittsburg County sheriff’s officers for help late Thursday night.

Narconon Arrowhead is a non-profit drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Canadian with ties to the church of Scientology, according to Gary Smith, director of the facility.

About 10:30 p.m. Thursday, two Pittsburg County sheriff’s officers were dispatched to Narconon Arrowhead to escort Destanie Ramsey, 19, of Holdenville, out of the facility after her mother said she was told she could not pick her up, according to Pittsburg County Undersheriff Richard Bedford.

“We asked her if she wanted to leave and she said yes,” Bedford said.

Ramsey said she wanted out because of the recent death of her roommate at the facility, Stacy Dawn Murphy.

Murphy, 20, was found dead Thursday morning, according to police report. The case is under investigation by the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Smith issued a statement Friday regarding Murphy’s death:

“... Our prayers are with them.

“For those who have committed their lives to saving people from drug and alcohol addiction, the loss of not helping a person before addiction wins them over takes an emotional toll on us as well. It is a sad day for everyone when something as unfortunate and devastating as this occurs ...”

Has there been any explanation for why narCONon was detaining Destanie Ramsey against her will until Sheriff's Deputies intervened?? Will any charges be filed against NN AH, or it's employees, over this, or will it just be another bit on the pile of negative PR narCONon is collecting??

No word on what OSBI or ODMHSAS is up to. One would think the NN Arrowhead license would get pulled, pending investigation, at the very least.

McALESTER — On Friday morning, Stacy Dawn Murphy, 20, was found dead at Narconon Arrowhead in Candian and her father said he wants answers. Robert "Murphy" Murphy of Owasso said he needs to know her death won't go unnoticed. "I want to know ...

From the article:
Quote
"Thats too long, if they though she was overdosed, why didn't they have someone with her the whole time?"

He said it wasn't until after she was checked in to the facility about 6 weeks ago that he found out about the recent deaths.

Why would they have thought she had overdosed, if she had been at the facility for 6 weeks?

And yes, something IS terribly wrong there, and it's called Narconon.  The sooner the authorities realize that and do something about it, the fewer people will die.

I saw some mention, perhaps it was on ESMB, that they claimed they had to get her paperwork in order.  However, she may know something of how Stacy died, or something relating to the circumstances, and my guess is they wanted time to work on her memory/thoughts so she wouldn't spill any inconvenient facts to authorities.  Just call me cynical.

I understand the logic of this completely. But, assuming this death ends up in criminal and/or civil court, for some of these people to attend is handing NN/Cof$ an excuse on a silver platter to recuse judges, or impinge the partiality of investigators. With possible consequences to other families that may decide to persue legal action. As much as I grieve for Mr. Murphy's loss, I strongly urge that he reconsider this invitation.

I have a thought. Would it be possible to connect each and every family with each other from across the USA that has had either a death or other horrific event happen against themselves or a loved one @ the hands of Narconon.

If ALL these families know that in other areas of the country the same horror stories are occurring @ various Narconon locations, those families can share information and knowledge.

With that combined knowledge, these families and their legal representatives can interact in a fashion that would aid them in their quest for justice.

Some are already in contact with each other, save for those who settled with Narconon and are unable to speak. One of them formed an informal group called  MAN  (Mothers Against Narconon)

Tess Maune - News On 6

In the past 12 months, three people have died while being treated at Narconon Arrowhead near McAlester. The most recent, 20-year-old Stacy Murphy from Owasso, was found dead Thursday morning.....

...Robert Murphy is coming to grips with Stacy's death.

He said she was a vibrant, bubbly girl with the world at her fingertips -- until she fell in with the wrong crowd.

"Stacy grew up in the church, she did the sports," Robert Murphy said. "So sweet and so bubbly, you just don't know what the struggle is that [was] going on inside of her and she was seeking help."

Robert Murphy said when Stacy's prescription drug addiction escalated to heroin, she agreed to seek treatment at Narconon Arrowhead, a drug and alcohol rehab facility with treatments inspired by teachings of the Church of Scientology.

"We went there for her to be cured, safe," Robert Murphy said. "She had so much potential."

Stacy was found dead Thursday morning.

Her father said she sneaked in drugs to the facility following a one- day visit home.

"My first thought was, ‘Well, Stacy did what she did to herself,'" Robert Murphy said. "But after hearing what [Narconon] did know, there was no reason for her to die."

Murphy said Narconon employees knew Stacy was on the verge of an overdose, but instead of providing her with the medical attention she needed, his daughter was put in a room and left to die.

"They did not call us as parents; they did not call a medical team," Robert Murphy said. "There was a shift change apparently at 7 o'clock. Nobody found her until 9:20."

"In Narconon's 20 years of operation, there [have] been three deaths at the Narconon facility and those have been within the last 12 months," CEO Gary W. Smith said in an email to News On 6.

Gabriel Graves, Hillary Holton, and Stacy Murphy.

What about Kaysie Werninck?

Quote
On Tuesday, March 3, 2009, Kaysie Dianne Werninck died of double pneumonia due to gross negligence on the part of Narconon Arrowhead in Oklahoma staff, who failed to get her the medical attention she needed and asked for but was prevented from receiving by Narconon until it was too late.  She died at EUFAULA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL Mc Intosh co aka Community Hospital Lakeview, in Eufaula, OK.

CEO Gary W. Smith's comment is what's known in scientology as a "shore story" or an "acceptable truth", fancy words for a LIE.  Since Kaysie actually died at the hospital in 2009, Mr. Smith and Narconon Arrowhead in Oklahoma can say there have been three deaths AT the facility and those were within the last 12 months, while the truth is, they are the cause of at least one other that we know about.

How many do we not know about?

How about 'connecting' former employees of the Narconons and/or front groups who would be willing to come forward to corroborate? Thats where the truth & power lies.

Hi Franco, and welcome.  I'd be delighted to help facilitate discussion between former employees of Narconon and other front groups.  If people would like to have those type of discussions in a private forum on this board, I'm willing to make one for them.  If they wanted to do it in public, even better, since it would spread the knowledge around.

To all former employees, if you're interested in having a private group here, please register and PM me.  If you want to discuss your experiences in public, come on in.

Thanks for the great idea, Franco!

Thats a good idea. Question is would ex employee,s be willing to do so in sufficient numbers that would come forward and could talk about their individual experiences in a unbiased fashion. If so it would bring a tremendous amount of credibility to their stance on the matter.
