The Foundation for a Drug Free World

The Foundation for a Drug Free World visited two public schools in New York this week. It is not known if they told school officials that they are a subsidiary of the Church of Scientology.

Included in the article are locations of the schools, a photos of sponsoring scientologist, dentist Bernard Fialkoff, DDS, in the classroom with children. Take a look

Poon sent to the CEO and Medical Director of the Office of School Health for NYC Schools. Included the link to the California report on narCONon’s ‘bad science’ of this program, and a request they act to prevent further presentations.

The addresses can be found under ‘Contacts’ on the right side of the page at:

It's important for schools to know the pseudoscience and ineffectiveness these and Narconon sponsored drug education programs teach children.  Please sent a comment CEO and Medical Director of the Office of School Health for NYC Schools. PM me if you need further information.

With names redacted, this is the poon that went to the Office of School Health for NYC Schools:

I just became aware of several blogs reporting on visits to NYC schools by a group doing a "Truth About Drugs" presentation. The specific schools are:

J.H.S. 278 Marine Park
1925 Stuart Street
Brooklyn, NY 11229

and

P.S. 207 Rockwood Park
159-15 88 Street
Queens, NY 11414

The group calls itself, "Foundation for a Drug Free World", and the "Truth About Drugs" material they present is from an organization called NARCONON International, which was determined by the IRS in 1993 to be a Church of Scientology Entity. It should also be noted NARCONON has nothing to do with Narcotics Anonymous, or N.A., other than deliberately using a name easily, and often, confused with that organization. Leaving aside the church/state issues possibly involved since NARCONON admitted to being "faith based" in a recent court case, I am more concerned with plain bad science being presented to public school students anywhere.

In 2004 there was a major controversy over the presentation of this material in California schools due to a series of articles on it by Nanette Asimov in the SFGate newspaper. The end result was a medical review of the material and a report that ended up in this material being banned from California schools.

The report is called, "Narconon Drug Abuse Prevention Program Evaluation - Evaluation of the Narconon Drug Abuse Prevention Program, prepared for the California Department of Education by the California Healthy Kids Resource Center, January 2005." This is an extract from the report Summary (NDAP = NARCON Drug Abuse Prevention):

"NDAP was evaluated for accuracy, developmental appropriateness, and teaching methods. Some drug-related information presented in the NDAP and supplementary resources provided to schools—although aligned with the Narconon drug rehabilitation methodology—does not reflect accurate, widely accepted medical and scientific evidence. Some information is misleading because it is overstated or does not distinguish between drug use and abuse. The NDAP elementary, middle, and high school presentation outlines are inadequately differentiated to the developmental characteristics and cognitive levels of student learners. Although the NDAP is ostensibly aligned with research-based practice, the actual presentation outlines, delivery scripts, and additional resources made available to schools are often inconsistent with these standards."

The full report can be found at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/at/narcononevaluation.asp

As with California's medical community, I am hoping your office can keep this bad science from continuing to make inroads to New York City's schools.

Thank you,
BigBeard

So far, no response from the Office of School Health for NYC Schools to that letter. I'm beginning to wonder if it went to the right people there, or if it should have gone to another department.

This office would know how the Foundation;s alternative and unsound program got into the school's Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention delivery program. How it provide unsound information to children in the first place, by what process, and if they are a funded program

Call and ask for email addresses of Ms Konstan and anyone else in charge of  who could answer these questions.  Be simple, polite and cautious when discussing this program, you never know if the person you are talking to is an ally of this program. Ask as above and also ask where complints can be made.

Thanks for the info Mary.

You're welcome. As you can see, it was rather late when I sent that, I tried to make the comment as cohesive as possible while I was falling asleep at the computer, lol I hope it's sufficient for you to reach the people in charge and get the complaint across.
Thanks for all you are doing on this.

Since Foundation for a Drug Free World opened their new storefront in Clearwater, it occurred to me to check for a Florida registration as a foreign company. Bingo!

Florida does list the directors/trustees, so here are the changes from their last Form 990 in 2010:

Director Marie Cecchini (of the many names) is now the VP.
Treasurer Aris Gregorian gone. (Donating to the Valley Ideal Org and money pit these days.)
Director Jim Brewer gone. (Mentioned as a director in a 2014 news article)

Jim Mathers is their agent in Florida, providing a fine counter-balance to Kendrick Moxon, their California agent.
