New look for the forum (sort of)
« on: June 02, 2009, 13:28 »
I've added a logo and a new background behind the logo.  This is the beginning of several changes to be made.  If you experience any problems that may be caused by any of the changes to come, please post about them in this thread, and I will see if I can sort them out.  Please give any pertinent information in your post, such as your browser, operating system, and the circumstances under which you experience the problem.

Thanks.  Suggestions are welcome too.

Looks nice!

If you want to explore, say, a purple theme in the future, I know there are free themes available for this forum type.

Thank you, Lorelei!  I did it as a svg (with Inkscape, cool and open source program), so it can be changed easily to any color later when it suits our needs.  It can also be rescaled for print, or however else we decide to use it.

I'm holding off on selecting (or creating) a full theme because we are currently using a RC (release candidate) version, and next RC version and the final version are said to include a change to the way themes are coded.

According to the developers, there has been an extensive effort to recode the style in the css (style sheet), where it belongs, instead of where much of it is now, in the php code.  When this happens, it will change a lot of the coding that makes up the style, and the themes which work for SMF 2.0 RC1 will not work for SMF 2.0 RC2 or SMF 2.0 Release without (probably major) changes.

It will probably take the theme designers some time to catch up when it happens, and it seems some themes don't always get updated with each new version.  So rather than delay our upgrade when it happens, I think it's probably better to stick with a mostly default but with some simple customization for now, rather than either select something we may not be able to stay with, or put in a lot of effort now to do something original and then have to redo it when the release happens.

That said, I'd love to have some input on what people would like to see, even including links to other sites that you like the design of.  Everyone who knows me knows I love purple, but I won't inflict a purple theme on everyone else, so suggestions for color schemes are welcome too.

So toss your ideas into the ring in this thread, everyone!

Here's a style that has capitivated me, for whatever reason; I guess it's because it's not all straight lines and rectangles.  I'm not endorsing any content for any of these sites, or color schemes (necessarily), or even any ones in particular; I'm just giving them to show the overall style:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?action=download;lemma=737;id=5035;image

http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=194/194.css
http://alifelski.com/
http://www.13creative.com/
http://www.heyjosh.com/
http://www.webdesignerwall.com/
http://www.bridge55.com/

After looking over them, I guess the common factors are: depth (3D look), raw edges, scraps of paper scattered like notes, and organic color.

What site designs do you like?  What colors?  Do you think the public would prefer something standard looking, or something different looking?  Examples?

These, I especially like; though some are more suited for blogs or website homepages than forums, I think.

Some took a while to load, or had Flash elements, which I think would put an undue burden on the designer (and people with slower 'net connections).

You clearly have excellent taste, however; they are all nicely designed.

Zen Garden is a resource I can highly recommend, FWIW.

I am not opposed to any of them. I particularly liked the look of this one: http://alifelski.com/

I thought that one was rather monotone also.

This is the designer's site who did the pietheory.com site (above); it was linked at the bottom of the pietheory page.  What do you not like about it?

Too frilly?  What if the frills were gone, and it was something more subtle for a background?

Try to look past any of the specific graphics, because we're not going to copy any of these designs directly, I'm just trying to get an idea of what styles/colors we may prefer or not.

Have you seen any sites where the look just made you go "WOW! I love the way this site looks"?  Please post links to them.

Are there any current designs in the works for the landing page to redirect people to the forums, also are there plans for a non member information area that can provide at a glance talking points that will catch the eye of passers by?

I have a landing page planned (and text already written), that will reside on www.reaching...etc.  It will, hopefully, catch the attention of people who hit it, and give them a link into the forums.  It will have the general same look as the forum, accomplished by a portal add-on: http://simpleportal.net/  At some point, we will probably add pages that give a brief introduction to the various front groups.

I also have been reworking the color scheme of the forum over the last couple of days, so it won't look so "default SMF" - it isn't a complete new layout, but the colors changed and graphics remade to fit the new colors.  It's in graphic format now; I hope to make the CSS changes this weekend and have it up very soon.  I am working on a duplicate test forum, so there should be no significant downtime, and will have a "maintenance mode" notice up when I do.

I'll be happy to entertain any suggestions.
