Times Staff Writer

Mike Wilson has been named managing editor of the Tampa Bay Times, part of a newsroom leadership reorganization that Times editor Neil Brown said will "keep our journalism strong and our aspirations high in 2012 and beyond."

Wilson, 50, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Times newsroom. For the past three years, he has directed the paper's enterprise and features work and has been in charge of the Sunday paper.

"Mike is a brilliant editor with high standards, excellent judgment and a knack for helping talented people do their best work," Brown said.

"I'm honored and incredibly excited to have a chance to lead this talented team of journalists," Wilson said. "This is the best newsroom anywhere, and I look forward to building on the Times' reputation for excellence."

Wilson started his career at the Miami Herald and has been a reporter, magazine writer and book author. Wilson was the primary editor on the Times' 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winning story by Lane DeGregory, "The Girl in the Window."

Wilson is a Connecticut native and lives in Clearwater with his wife, Alisa. He has three children, Dyami, Lena and Kirby.

Wilson's appointment was part of a series of promotions Brown announced this week:

• Jennifer Orsi becomes deputy managing editor/metro and business news. Orsi, 45, a 23-year Times veteran who was raised in Clearwater, will be the senior editor in charge of local and business coverage in the paper's four-county Tampa Bay coverage area. "Jennifer is at the hub of our local news report," Brown said.

• Joe Childs becomes senior editor/at large. Childs, 62, has been a Times journalist for 36 years and most recently has written and directed the paper's award-winning investigative coverage of the Church of Scientology. He will continue that work, and direct strategic business projects for the company.....
